HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• Founded by Muhammad in July 16th 622.A.D
• Muhammad was a prophet born in the city of Mecca in A.D 570 to
Abdullah who died two months after his birth. His Mum Aminah died when
he was six years old
• Mecca by Muhammad’s birth time was known to be polytheistic famous for
the 360 idols containing the image of the moon God Hubal, al-Uzza and
manat and the black stone.
• Muhammad grew with his uncle Abu Talib, at 25, he married a wealthy 40
years old woman called Khadijah
• In A.D.610 Muhammad claimed to have received revelation of Quran from
God through angel Gabriel
Islam History continue
• After his uncle Abu talib died, the leaders of various Meccan tribes
and clans vowed to assassinate him.
• Angel Gabriel warned him and he fled to Yatrib, now renamed Madina
• This migration is called hijra and it makes the beginning of Islamic
calendar
• Muhammed established himself as both political and religious leader
in Madina and later in A.D. 630 mobilized a troop who over took
Mecca.
• On June 8 632 Muhammad died
• His successors continued to spread Islamic faith to other Arab nations
and other parts of the world.
Five pillars of Islam
Five
pillars
Shahada
Sawm
Hijira
Salat
Zakat
FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM
• Confession (Shahada) “there is no God but God, and Muhammad is the
Apostle of God” this is the assertion of Unitarian monotheism that is
crucial to Islam
• Prayer (salat) each muslim is supposed to perform the required ritual
prayers five times a day
• Fasting (sawm). Muhammad received his first revelation in the month of
Ramadan, in commemoration of this month, Muslims are required to fast
during daylight hours throughout the month.
• Alms giving (Zakat) the Qur’an commands all believers to practice regular
charity (Sura 2:43)
• Pilgrimage (Hajj), if all possible, a Muslim should visit Mecca at least once
Worldview- what is reality
• Allah is the only true God, he is unapproachable by sinful man.
Muslim desire is to submit to a point where he can hold his hands of
judgment and inherit eternal life in a heavenly paradise often pictured
in terms of food, wine and sexual pleasure.
• Allah is sovereign, distant and angry but can forgive (Sura 11:90)
• God has no likeness (Sura 42:11), transcendent (Sura 4:171) and
unknowable except by revelation
• Abrogation is essentially allowed (Sura 2:100/106)
• No holy spirit but angel Gabriel
Biblical response
• God is eternal, immutable, self sufficient, omnipotent,
omniscience
• God has personal relationship with people but sins
separates him with people (Romans 8:14-15)
• Man is created in the likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-28)
• Jesus is the incarnate son of God (John 3:16)
• The holy spirit is the third person of the trinity (Acts 1:8)
Human nature- Islam
• God made man in his spiritual Image (Man is not in the image of God)
• Man is born sinless but weak and forgetful of God’s laws
• All people (except Jesus and some prophets) commit sin and when
they repent, they are forgiven
• Every good and evil action is a result of God’s predestination, those
whom he guides fulfills his requirements
• Man suffers from temptation and doubts whispered by Satan. His
activity is not a result of sin
Human nature- Christianity
• God made man in his own spiritual image, with his attribute so that
man can fellowship with God (Genesis 1: 26-28) man is capable of
being aware of God’s presence, having moral consciousness, ability to
love, laugh, create and communicate
• Man has inherited sin from Adam (Romans 5:14, 1Cor. 15:22) and for
this reason man is inclined to sinning
• Man has misconception about God’s requirement
• Man is by nature a hopeless sinner, unable to comply with God’s
righteous requirement
After death- Islam
• Believes in resurrection, devote of Allah will end up in
heaven which is depicted with a lot of pleasure, food,
wine and sex. However for the non-Muslim they will
end up in hell.
• However there isn’t any clear basis for resurrection
like the Christian claims.
• There is the concept of Judgment after death on the
basis of ones work
After death- Christianity
• Its appointed for men once to die and after that face
Judgment (Hebrews 9:27). The Biblealso teaches
about resurrection of all but some to everlasting joy
while other s to everlasting contempt
• The basis for Christian claim on resurrection is on the
ground the Christ was raised from the dead(1Cor
15:12)
How do you determine right and wrong-Islam
The Qur'an is the standard for weighing right and
wrong. Being able to practice the five pillars of
Islam: Prayers, giving, confession, pilgrimage and
fasting one can be in the right standing with God.
failure to do that means being on the wrong side.
Christianity response on right and wrong
•The standard for determining right and wrong
for Christians is the Bible. Our conscience is also
the determining point for the right and wrong
(Romans 12: 1-2)
•There is reward of righteous living in Christ with
eternal life and punishment for unbelief with
eternal condemnation in all
How do we know what we know?- Islam
•God created all things with perfect knowledge.
Human being are the result of God’s creation
and they were created innocent but weak.
•God revealed the details of human life and
history to prophet Muhammad in the Qur’an
How we know what we know- Christianity
•God who is having a personal relationship
with his children has been revealing himself
through creation, prophets and Jesus Christ
his son (Romans 8:19)
Reaching out to a Muslim
• Sharing with them about a divinely loving God who wants to have a
personal relationship with human. Salvation by grace not by work
(John 3:16)
• Share how the Qur’an holds a high view of the scriptures (Sura
4:47/54)
• Authenticity of the old testament revealed many years before
Muhammad such as Septuagint, the Syrian peshitta and the targums.
The new testament is the fulfilment of this revelation
Witnessing to a Muslim
• Emphasize that even the Qur’an says Jesus was without sin. Even the
bible confirms the same.(Heb. 11: 1-8)
• Christian should love Muslim, they have strong zeal to follow God
shown by their dedication in prayer time .
• Demonstrating the power of the Holy spirit to a Muslim will help
nullify argument (2Cor 10:4-5)
