Paterson Deck - 2014
These are images from a Sketchup construction model, of a deck
designed for a client's backyard garden. The deck was designed to sit on
concrete pedestals over gravel fill. The pergola was designed to be
supported by poured concrete piers. All of the components could be
purchased at a retail store. And the deck and pergola could be
constructed by the client himself, with a minimum of assistance.
3. Farnsworth House Diagram - 2013
The Farnsworth House was modeled in Sketchup as an exercise in
illustration and analysis. Each building component was created
separately, then assembled into the house. The simplicity of the Mies
van der Rohe design lent itself to Sketchup, and it was interesting to see
how the elements created shadows within the model.
4. Parkrose Middle School Addition - 2012
Hoffman Construction commissioned a Sketchup model to illustrate the
site excavation work prior to the renovation of Parkrose Middle School,
near Portland, OR. The model shows how the soil would be displaced to
make way for new wings on the building.
5. Moving Van-to-Office Conversion - 2012
Hoffman Construction
proposed converting a
moving van into a
field office. A
Sketchup model was
created to illustrate
the possibility. The
interior of the van
offered just enough
space for a work
counter and shelving.
Drawings and binders
could be opened and
reviewed during
construction
supervision.
6. Art Studio Addition - 2011
The client requested
proposals for an art
studio to be built
adjacent to her home
near Reed College, in
Portland. Various
options were
illustrated using
Sketchup, then
presented to the City
of Portland for review.
The client later built
her studio in the side
yard, as a freestanding
building.
7. Garage to Studio Conversion - 2010
The client asked for a proposal to convert her old detached garage into
a small art studio. The garage would be cleaned, painted, and sealed.
New doors, windows, and skylights were to be added, opening directly
onto the sidewalk and street.
8. UW Student Assembly Building - 2010
Hoffman Construction asked for an illustration to show how a new
university building would fit into an existing campus. This Sketchup
model shows the excavation, as well as a proposal for a five-story
structure on the site. Existing trees were to be preserved as part of the
strategy.
9. New Oregon State Hospital - 2010
This Sketchup model presents a strategy for a new mental health
facility near Salem, OR. The building, parking, and access roads are
shown, placed on a previously open site.
10. Idaho Secure Mental Health Facility - 2010
Hoffman Construction commissioned a Sketchup model to illustrate
construction phasing for a new facility new Boise, ID. The model was
presented as slides that showed the project in sequence. Construction
staging areas were represented in the illustrations; as were new
retention ponds and access roads.
11. New Sandy High School - 2010
This model shows the sequence of construction for the new Sandy High
School. Existing trees were preserved as part of the overall planning
strategy. New drainage and retention ponds were illustrated. Some of
the classroom wings of the new building were constructed on piers, to
minimize the building footprint within the landscape.
12. ODOT Headquarters
Renovation - 2009
Hoffman Construction proposed
a renovation and seismic
upgrade to the existing
headquarters of the Oregon
Department of Transportation,
on the capitol mall in Salem, OR.
New mechanical, electrical, and
plumbing systems were
illustrated in the color diagram.
Solar panels are shown on the
roof, in dark blue.
13. Exterior Cladding Detail - 2009
This model illustrates an exterior, insulated, stone cladding system. It
presents the veneer, as well as the required stud structure behind it.
14. Slab Edge Detail - 2009
This was a proposal for an extension to a high-rise building floor slab.
The steel braces were to continue around the perimeter of the building,
on every floor, adding needed square footage to the existing floor
plates.

reconstruction for a federal office building in downtown Portland, OR.
