CURRICULUM VITAE OF PROFESSOR SHAMSUDDIN

A Biographical Note
Professor Shamsuddin obtained B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Metallurgical Engineering,
respectively, in 1968, 1970 and 1974 from the Banaras Hindu University. He joined the
Department of Metallurgical Engineering, BHU as a Lecturer in Metallurgy in August 1971
and subsequently promoted to the post of Reader and Professor in 1979 and 1987,
respectively. He spent three years (from June 1978 to June 1981) in the United States, one
year each at the James Franck Institute, University of Chicago; Department of Metallurgy,
University of Utah, Salt Lake City and Department of Materials Science and Engineering,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. At MIT he held the position of Visiting
Associate Professor and taught a graduate course entitled “Physical Chemistry of
Metallurgical Processes” on invitation from late Professor John F. Elliott. His fields of
specialization are Chemical/Metallurgical/Materials Thermodynamics and Chemical
Extractive Metallurgy which are very close to the field of Chemical Engineering. He has
conducted extensive measurements to determine thermodynamic properties of
semiconducting intermetallics, binary and ternary alloy systems using calorimetric and
electrochemical techniques. In chemical-extractive metallurgy area he has been involved in
studies on roasting, leaching and sulphide-oxide interactions. Professor Shamsuddin also
extended his researches on ferromagnetic shape memory alloys based on Ni-Mn-Ga and
impedance measurement of high band gap semiconductoers, viz. CdTe, ZnTe etc.
The dedicated, purposeful and goal-oriented researches of Professor Shamsuddin on
Semiconducting Chalcogenides and Sulphides Metallurgy have resulted in a massive output
of phenomenal contributions both basic and applied in nature. Many standard and high
quality papers have been published in very reputed international journals (e.g. the
Metallurgical Transactions, J. Chemical Physics, J. Applied Physics, J. Less Common Metals,
Thermochimica Acta, High Temperature Science, J. Materials Science, Microelectronics J.,
Solid State Electronics, Materials and Metallurgical Transactions etc. Six candidates have
obtained the coveted doctorate degree under his supervision. The candidate’s work is cited as
a standard source of reliable data.
Professor Shamsuddin’s high quality work is held in great esteem. Thermodynamic data
published by him are widely referred. A few measures of the recognition of his outstanding
contributions and achievements (Appendix: III) include the Pandya Medal (1975), INSA
Young Scientist Award (1975), Visiting Associate Professor at MIT (1981), two large
Research Schemes in the field of Thermodynamics and Electron Transport Properties of
Semiconducting Intermetallics (1985-94), Best Metallurgists Award (1993) from the Ministry
of Steel & Mines, Government of India and MRSI (Materials Research Society of India)
Medal (1995). In recognition and appreciation of his services the Metallurgical Society,
AIME, USA presented a plaque to Dr. Shamsuddin.
He retired from the faculty on May 31, 2010. After retirement Dr. Shamsuddin started
working on the manuscripts of two books entitled “Physical Chemistry of Metallurgical
Processes” and “Thermodynamic Measurement Techniques”. The first one has been
published by TMS and Wiley (First Edition, Feb./March 2016, ISBN: 9781119078319,
9781119078326 and 9781119078333).

(A)TEACHING: THIRTYNINE years of teaching experience including 29 years of post-
graduate courses in different capacities as per Appendix – I. For details please see
Teaching Statement attached in separate file.
(B) LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT
 ORGANISED AND DEVELOPED a “Laboratory for Studies on Chemical
Thermodynamic and Electron Transport of Materials”. This Laboratory had several
locally designed and fabricated as well as some sophisticated equipments and
somewhat uniquely suited for researches on Thermodynamics of Chalcogenides and
other Semiconducting/Super-conducting Materials.
 Designed and fabricated a variety of apparatuses including high temperature
Differential Thermal Analysis Calorimeters, Liquid Metal Solution Calorimeter,
Constant Temperature Gradient Calorimeter, Galvanic Cell Assemblies, Transpiration
Apparatus Coupled with Two-Probe Conductivity Set-up, Hall Set-up, High Vacuum
Sealing Unit etc.
 Installed and operated sophisticated equipments such as Cahn-2000 Magnetic
Susceptibility System, Linseis Thermobalance, Hall Package-80 and IV System
(Keithley Instruments).
 Setting up such a unique Thermodynamic and Electron Transport Laboratory required
taking up of sponsored Research Projects with massive financial support and
persistent painstaking efforts spanning nearly a decade.
(C) RESEARCH: FOURTY years of research experience including THREE years as
Postdoctoral at the University of Chicago, University of Utah and Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, USA. For details please see Research Statement attached
in separate file.
(D) ADMINSTRATIVE/COCURRICULAR ACTIVITES
 Important Administrative contributions concerning organizational matters,
laboratory development, conduct of examinations, postgraduate, research and
purchase matters and organization of National/International

  • 3. (B) LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT  ORGANISED AND DEVELOPED a “Laboratory for Studies on Chemical Thermodynamic and Electron Transport of Materials”. This Laboratory had several locally designed and fabricated as well as some sophisticated equipments and somewhat uniquely suited for researches on Thermodynamics of Chalcogenides and other Semiconducting/Super-conducting Materials.  Designed and fabricated a variety of apparatuses including high temperature Differential Thermal Analysis Calorimeters, Liquid Metal Solution Calorimeter, Constant Temperature Gradient Calorimeter, Galvanic Cell Assemblies, Transpiration Apparatus Coupled with Two-Probe Conductivity Set-up, Hall Set-up, High Vacuum Sealing Unit etc.  Installed and operated sophisticated equipments such as Cahn-2000 Magnetic Susceptibility System, Linseis Thermobalance, Hall Package-80 and IV System (Keithley Instruments).  Setting up such a unique Thermodynamic and Electron Transport Laboratory required taking up of sponsored Research Projects with massive financial support and persistent painstaking efforts spanning nearly a decade.
