_____ is a liquid generally used to
decrease infectious agents on the
hands. Formulations of the alcohol-based type are
preferable to hand washing with soap and water in
most situations in the healthcare setting. It is
generally more effective at killing microorganisms and
better tolerated than soap and water. Hand washing
should still be carried out if contamination can be
seen or following the use of the toilet. The general
use of non-alcohol based versions has no
recommendations. Outside the health care setting
evidence to support the use of hand sanitizer over
hand washing is poor. They are available as liquids,
gels, and foams.

The first attested use of the word is from 1781 and means
an odd person.
There is a well-known myth about the word --- that says
that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named Richard Daly
made a bet that he could introduce a word into the
language within 24 hours. He then went out and hired a
group of street urchins to write the word----- ", which was
a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin.
Within a day, the word was common currency and had
acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant,
everyone thought it was some sort of test) and Daly had
some extra cash in his pocket.[2] However, there is no
evidence to support the story, and the term was already in
use before the alleged bet in 1791.
