3. LAN
• A local-area network (LAN) connects the computer hardware in a
localizedarea such as an office or home.
• A LAN encompasses computers and connected to a server within a
small geographic area such as an office building , home , school ,
laboratory.
• Ethernet and Wi-Fi are the two most commonly used LAN
technologies.
• Most LANs connect workstations and personal computers.
• Typically, LANs use wired connections to link the computers to each
other.
4. What is VLAN?
• It stands for Virtual Local Area Network.
• It is defined as a broadcast domain within a switch network.
• A switch can be configured to support a single or multiple VLANs.
• Each VLAN Becomes its own broadcast domain.
• Virtual LAN is a solution to divide a single Broadcast domain into
multiple Broadcast domains.
• Host in one VLAN cannot speak to a host in another.
• By default, all hosts are placed into the same VLAN.
5. In this diagram, different VLANs are
depicted in different color codes. Hosts
in one VLAN, even if connected on the
same Switch cannot see or speak to
other hosts in different VLANs. VLAN is
Layer-2 technology which works closely
on Ethernet. To route packets between
two different VLANs a Layer-3 device
such as Router is required.
Two network in one switch:
6. Administrative VLAN:
• VLAN1 is one of the factory default VLANs.
• You can’t delete or change the name of VLAN1.
• By default all ports of a switch are members of VLAN1 until you
change them.
• Each node attached in switch, considers in VLAN1.
• At the first, all ports of a switch are in VALN1.
7. Creating VLANs:
• VLANs are created by configuring a switch to place each port in a
particular VLAN.
• Maximum number of VLAN is switch-dependent.
• Catalyst 1900 supports 64 VLANs.
• VLANs can be created without any assigned port and they can be
empty of specific node.
• We can logically train VLANs in some soft wares such as Sisco Packet
Tracer.
9. VLAN Characteristics:
• Each VLAN should be specified by a name and a number.
• They cannot get the same name.
• Switches forward frames between devices in the same VLAN.
• They cannot forward frames between different VLANs.
• Routers can be used to essentially route packets between VLANs.
10. Benefits of VALN:
• Broadcast control: VLANs create logical collision domain. VLANs allow only
broadcast and multicast traffic within their own collision domain.
• Security: Only members of one VLAN can communicate with the member of
same VLAN. This level of security might be required for certain project and
application.
• Performance: You can place network intensive application for testing in their
own separate VLAN. This will increase performance due to higher bandwidth for
both.
• Network Management: Switches can be configured using for VLAN
configuration and reassignment. This is very efficient.
11. Types of VLAN
• Static VLAN:
• It is port based.
• Configured by administrator.
• Users physical location do not matter.
• Each host must have the current IP address to belong to own subnet.
• Dynamic VLAN:
• Each configuration is complex and it is done by Administrator.
• It can be MAC, protocol or application based.
• Users can physically move from one location to location without losing their
original VLAN membership.
12. Commands for configuration:
• Enable: Go to privilege mode
• Show vlan brief: Show information about VLANs
• Vlan database: Go to VLAN mode
• Vlan Number name Name: Add new VLAN
• Config terminal: Go to global configuration mode
• Interface fastEthernet Portnumber: Go to interface of a port number
• Switchport access vlan Number: Identify a port number to any vlan
• Exit: Exit from a mode
• Wr: Save the setting of a switch
