MANAROLA VILLAGE, CINQUE TERRE, ITALY
Manarola may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre. One of
the tiniest of Italy’s Cinque Terre, Manarola is a rainbow of brightly
colored homes piled one on top of another above the indigo Ligurian
Sea. There is no beach in Manarola, but there are natural pool
formed among the rocks of its coastline, ideal for swimming. In
recent years, Manarola and its neighboring towns have become
popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months.
Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and
wine-making. The town itself is lively, with a small but bustling piazza
and an active fishing trade. Manarola is famous for its Christmas
celebrations, when it puts on the biggest illuminated nativity scene
in the world. It is a magical event that is especially impressive when
seen from the water !
