2. HISTORY OF CLOVER TOWNSHIP
Clover was the thirteenth township organized in Jefferson
County, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1841, and
was taken from Rose township to its East. It was named
for Levi G. Clover, who was the prothonotary of Jefferson
County at the time. The Borough of Summerville is
contained entirely within Clover Township, with the
unincorporated villages of Baxter and Content being
located in the township as well.
3. HISTORY OF SUMMERVILLE BOROUGH
Summerville, which is the principal town of Clover, was
incorporated as a borough in March 1887. It was noted
as being a wide-awake and growing town. Summerville
was previously known as Troy, and appears that way in
many old maps. The first election of Summerville was held
on 15 March 1887, after it was made a separate election
district. Charles Jacox was elected as Justice of the
Peace at this time.
