The document provides details on the planning and production of a fashion magazine. It discusses conducting primary research through questionnaires with 10 people to understand audience interests. The results showed females were more interested in fashion magazines than males. Secondary research looked at existing magazines to see what elements appeal to audiences. The magazine will feature the student's own photography and has permission to feature model Jessica Bradford. Photos will be taken in the college photography studio using available equipment like cameras and lighting. As the equipment and model are provided by the college, there are no production costs.
1. Rational
Primary research: for my primary research I used questionnaires and gave them to an group of up to ten people
including males and females. This give a fair result and shows an accurate representation of who is interested in
the magazine. Looking at my results, I noticed a consistency in the male results compared to female results.
Within the female results I could see that they showed a keen interest towards fashion magazines an gave the
most positive answers in my questionnaire. This included saying thy would choose to read a fashion magazine in
their spare time and would be interested in my own when made. However, for the male population of the group,
it showed a lack of interest and showed interests towards other magazines that they enjoyed including music and
sport magazines. These were the negative answers from my group and shows that the target audience will most
likely be females.
Secondary research: within my secondary research I looked at other products of fashion magazines and what
they include to intrigue a target audience and be successful. Annotating magazines such as glamour and vogue
magazines , I can see what has to be included to make a successful magazine. This includes having: barcode,
masthead, date of issue, use of colour, buzzwords, cover lines, high quality images, advert of a product used,
direct mode off address. Looking at these magazines, and comparing them to my own makes me look at the
planning of my magazine in a different way and helps me to decide what to include to appeal to the target
audience.
2. Rational
Contributors: within this fashion magazine, all my images will be produced myself as I want them to involve my
own themes and to be the way I want them to be. However I will have to get permission for my model to be
involved and see if if am allowed to take images of them. My model is going to be Jessica Bradford and I have
been given consent to include her within my main images.
Locations: I would want to shoot in the photography studio in the college premises. I have chosen this place to
shoot as there is a use of blank backgrounds that can be put behind the model which gives space on the main
image to add cover lines. This blank background will add an aesthetic to the front cover and can also fit with the
colour scheme of the magazine.
Equipment: the main equipment I will be needing to use to get the perfect images for my photography is
cameras and lighting. The camera I will be using is Canon EOS 4000D DLSR camera body with 18-55mm lens. This
will create a focused shot and is a high quality camera to contribute to high quality images. Also the use of
lighting within the photography studio is given and these are lighting such as soft box lighting and spotlights.
Costing equipment and crew: because of the cameras and lighting being within college premises and having a
student model for my magazine there will be no costs to put towards the production of this magazine. The
cameras can be loaned out by technology crew in college and lighting is free to use within the photography
studio.
3. Pitch
My chosen genre to base my magazine on is fashion and lifestyle. Existing products that inspire and influence my
work are companies such as vogue, Elle, cosmopolitan and many other big named brands known worldwide. I chose
magazine over film because I am more experienced within production of magazines and I enjoy it more making me
more dedicated towards how professional I made it. My magazine will be aimed at 18-34 year olds and this is shown
through the model used being around that age and it is aimed at both male and female due to the topic being
fashion. I took into account the uses and gratification theory by Katz and Blumler because the audience can use it for
personal identity with all of the fashion tips so they can find themselves. Diversion because they can read the
magazine for entertainment purposes and surveillance because they can get information from the fashion topics. I
used the connotations and denotations within my work for example, I used the colour scheme of black and white
which is the denotation and the connotation from this is that sometimes colour doesn’t always matter. My magazine
targets the 18-35-year-old age group within the topics on my contents page as the sub- genres I have chosen to base
my articles on are beauty, lifestyle and fashion which is appealing to people within that age range. The majority of
my images within the magazine are full body/mid shots, this is so the genre of fashion comes out within the image as
you can see the full appearance of the model so the audience sees what they are wanting.Within the contents page
the model is looking directly into the camera so as an audience that gaze of the model grabs their attention and they
can’t look away making them more likely to read the magazine. The publishing company I will be using is Denis
Publishing which is an independent publishing company. I will use this publishing company because they publish
magazines that fit the needs of both genders and all age groups so there is a variety of magazines they work with
and this can come into my magazine as it is a different type of genre which is what the company go for.
4. The proposal
I would look into the fashion aspects and what kind of fashion I am going to base my magazine on, from this
I am going to choose between indie or girly. I will do this so I can decide who i will target my magazine
towards and see which there is a greater population of.This means more people will be interested in
purchasing my magazine. To produce my magazine I will use the software Photoshop to construct the basic
shape of the front cover and double page spread to make it the most realistic it can be.Technical
considerations including equipment hire is all taken care of as the equipment such as camera and lighting
belongs to the college photography studio and you can hire these major parts for free. Contributors will be
my model Jessica Bradford. I got her permission through contacting her privately. The location in which I
am shooting the photos are within the college premises and this allows me permission because I am a
student. The equipment that will be used is Canon EOS 4000D DLSR camera body with 18-55mm lens and
spotlights to give natural lighting. Scheduling and planning will be considered as it gives a steady running
time of when I need to produce work for and this helps me not to rush with the images of my work and I will
already have my images planned out which helps to acknowledge what I'm doing in the production line.
This helps to create a well organized magazine. Legal and ethical considerations will be considered as some
areas of land you need permission to shoot on or you could be charged for using private property illegally.
Also you want to consider not having anyone unwanted in the images as you'd need their consent to be in
the photos and also brand logos need to be covered unless you have permission for use. Using secondary
sources which could be images of products that aren’t your own, you need to add a source or a ‘by- line’ to
show who has credits to that image as you cant take credit for it as your own.
5. The proposal
Generating primary content of my own means images are created by me and even sub images which are
smaller than the regular images are all created by myself and the text that is included in the double page
spread is all my own product and not copy and pasted from the internet as it would have to be sourced if
it wasn’t my own as it Is against the law to take other people work as your own and this may effect the go
ahead with the magazine.
Magazines that inspire my product:
8. The treatment
Justification: looking at my flat plan designs, I have chose to set out my front cover this way because it
gives me space to show an empowering image of a female and still allows me to add cover lines to
describe what is going on. My mast head will be large at the top to divert the attention to this magazine
within a bundle of magazines. The image used appeals to my target audience as it is a female based
magazine and this will attracts the female target audience which are teens and above. This establishes
who will be wanting to read the magazine and why they should infect read it.These relate to
requirements of the brief as it needs to appeal and show who the magazine is for and what the genre is
and these images and cover lines show this. Also the mast head will include a given hint that it is a
magazine. Shot types of tis front cover will be a straight on dominant image to use the gaze technique so
the model looks focused on the reader and the reader feels directly targeted .The setting will be a basic
plain backdrop to focus the attention on the model and the lighting will be a spot light focused on them to
show a centre of attention. Makeup will be very subtle as it needs to look as natural as possible to show no
fake beauty and a good role model for the viewers to look up at.The layout of font will be a very
professional font so it is easily read and it will be in a black colour so it is easily read. The language and
register will be formal as we are directing the image to the reader and targeting the words at them such
as ‘you’ Also I have set the double page spread into three columns as it allows me to include as much
information as I please and the alleys between my blocks of text will looks neater and also the pull quote
can be places in the centre of this text. Also there is a page dedicated to a full dominant image to show
who the article is about and this allows the target audience to be acknowledged here too.
9. The treatment
Also for the double page spread the shot type within that dominant image will be from an angle to show a
different aspect of the model that we have seen before so we get to know the model in a different way
which helps to relate to what the story could be about. The setting would yet again be on a basic
background but have a different aspect of lighting to create a different mood to the audience. Makeup
will be consistent throughout the magazine. Facial expressions may change due to mood of the article
within the double page spread so this could consist of happy or sad depending on the story line. The font
of the article will yet again be in a professional style black writing to give the magazine that polished
profession. The language a register may be informal due to the audience not being directly targeted as
the article is about the model and doesn’t involve them so direct mode of address may not be used and
the idea of the gaze may not be used as it is focusing on the model.
10. Prepare content
The platform in which my magazine will be distributed on is through Denis Publisher who is a distributor
of independent magazines across the world and this will allow my magazine to get online and in print
form if requested.
Writing: examples of the font that may be used are : Andalusia, euro roman, Microsoft Himalaya
Editing; Photoshop images and use it to also construct magazine
To scale my images to ensure they aren’t stretched are to pull from corners only and not to pull it up or
sideways as this will effect the quality of the image and the main aim is to produce high quality image.
Saving the production of your work can take up a large scale of storage within the computer system so it
is always easier to switch your magazine to a JPEG saved production as it takes up less storage and is
easier to transport the work across platforms.
