• The volitional form is used when we want to
express your will or intention to do something
• The volitional form is the plain form of ましょう
(let’s)
• Volitional form can be used with と思います and
show that you think of doing something with
your intention/will
• Volitional form can be used with とします to
mean you try to do something with your intention.

• Change to ‘o’ column sound and add う

• Take off ます(る if it is plain form) and add
よう

8. Volitional form + と思います
• テレビを見ようと思います。
– I think I will watch TV
• 音楽を聞こうと思います。
– I think I will listen to music
• レストランに行こうと思います。
– I think I will go to a restaurant
• サッカーをしようと思います。
– I think I will play football
• This shows your intention of what you will do.
• When you use 思っています, this implies that the
speaker’s decision was made some time ago
