2. CHECKING COMPREHENSION
Asking students if they had understood
what you have taught them isn´t really
enough to check their understanding
about the topic taught.
3. Tips for asking questions
Do not ask “do you understand?”
Students can easily answer yes or no just to
avoid the fake feeling of “embarrassment” of
not having understood.
Ask everyone, vary who you ask to, do not
ask the same people every time.
Encourage interpretation. Use questions
which involve thinking about the meaning.
4. Tips for asking questions
Encourage discussion on meaning. Use
questions with more than one possible
answer.
Personalize the questions, involve students
directly in the questions.
Eg. Do you wake up early everyday?
What kinds of movies do you like?
5. Encourage self-checking
Encourage students to ask for clarification.
They should not feel ashamed or
embarrassed that they haven’t understood.
Discourage any mockery and encourage
those who self-correct.
6. Use the vocabulary taught yourself so your
student has more examples and is
encouraged to utilize what has been taught.
Study faces as you talk, take lack of response
as probably lack of understanding.
