2. ANALYZE THE LEARNER
• The students are third graders. There are 20 students total, with 12 being boys and 8 being
girls. 4 of the students are Latino, 6 are Italian, and 10 are Caucasian. They have little to no
prior knowledge on the continents and their location. Their learning styles vary greatly with
most learning more from doing an activity, while few of them learn efficiently from just
listening. To verify their knowledge before hand I will ask them general questions to figure
out where to start at.
3. OBJECTIVE
• The students will know each continent by name and location on a map, as well as some
important characteristics about each continent. These include bordering oceans, major
mountain ranges, and major rivers. Each student must individually label the continents,
oceans, and important land features on a map by the end of the week with 90% accuracy.
4. DAILY BREAKDOWN
• Monday- Introduction to the oceans and continents
• Show students catchy song and have them sing along
• Take students to the playground and label each piece of equipment a continent. Then they have to run each piece
whenever that continent is yelled out
• Tuesday- Learn the placement of each continent
• YouTube video discussing the location of each continent
• Color a map of the world labeling each continent and ocean
• Wednesday- Discuss popular features of each country (Examples: Safari’s for Africa, Andes Mountains for
Asia, kangaroos for Australia, coldness of Antarctica, Amazon River in South America, Eiffel Tower for
Europe, Statue of Liberty for North America)
• Students will start their project on a continent of their choosing. For the project they’ll have an outline of their
continent and within the continent they will draw a picture of what they think describes that continent.
5. DAILY BREAKDOWN
• Thursday- Interesting facts about each continent using informative YouTube video
• Continue project
• Friday- Practice labeling maps and presentations
• Shepherdsoftware.net
• Students will present their projects
