Editor's Notes
University Meets Microfinance (UMM) is a European initiative which fosters cooperation between European universities, students in Europe and microfinance practitioners to contribute to microfinance innovation and education for development.
Previous to UMM PlaNet Finance had strong links and existing cooperation with Universities in Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Belgium and Portugal. In France, PlaNet Finance organized regular workshops at Universities like Paris Dauphine or Cergy Pontoise. In Germany, PlaNet Finance already provided practical mentorships to students from the European School of Management ESCP-EAP or the Fachhochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (FHTW), in close cooperation with professors. PlaNet Finance participated in a microfinance seminar organized at the Free University, its partner for the project.
In 2005, the European Microfinance Programme was launched by the three universities Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB, SBS-EM), Paris Dauphine and Wageningen and by PlaNet Finance, in response to the growing demand for training in development activities, particularly in microfinance. PlaNet Finance also developed its own Training Centre based in Paris (which was called Planet University), where regular trainings were organized with the participation of senior experts and specialists of Microfinance and Banking.
Free University Berlin is recognized as one of the leading German universities (2006 Excellency Award). Its Institute for Latin American Studies has been offering a special course on microfinance for more than 20 years. Every year, some students write papers on microfinance, which have unfortunately not been enough diffused until now. Prof. Manfred Nitsch (emeritus) has long-standing experience in microfinance and has written several books on the topic.
UMM was created in 2009 by PlaNet Finance and Freie Universitat Berlin to respond to a rapidly growing interest by students and academics in the field of microfinance as well as an increasing need for knowledge creation and dissemination. At the time more and more universities were contacting PlaNet Finance for conferences and courses or wanted to conduct case studies of projects.
2010 : European Microfinance Platform through the UMM Action Group- brings together practitioner organizations and universities
Today, UMM has grown thanks to the support and trust of partners such as the European Union, the European Microfinance Platform, the GIZ on behalf of the BMZ, the Agence Francaise de Developpement, the European Investment Bank Institute, Free University of Berlin and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. In 2010, PlaNet Finance and the European Microfinance Platform jointly set up the e-MFP “UMM” Action Group to further enhance education and student research on financial inclusion themes.

Microfinance education
We partner with universities to conduct lectures and seminars on microfinance based on approximately 20 modules that UMM has created over the years, which utilize relevant research, case studies, group exercises, multimedia resources and provide students with relevant literature produced from both the academic and practitioner communities.
over 40 seminars at 20 different universities Europe wide
1732 students have participated in UMM Seminars
ToT: UMM also conducts a training of trainers on our teaching methodology and modules. In the past the ToT was for anyone with an interest to teach microfinance, including practitioners, however this year we will focus more on supporting universities who are interested in introducing microfinance courses to their curriculum.

Advanced courses on poverty, development and inclusive financial services through eLearning platforms, contributes to the professionalization of people working in the field
Technology
Technology offers cost-effective solutions for universities to provide courses and/or trainings and to increase outreach.
Also enables microfinance organizations around the world to gain access to educational tools and information to conduct studies and evaluations of programs.
Replication of the UMM program in other regions
can be adapted to the needs of each region to focus on supporting the development of educational and training programs for employment but also in developing local human capacity in areas like research and project management
