Dissertation Summary
3
4. This work represents a contribution to the emerging field of comparative theology and to
interreligious dialogue. It contrasts the work of two contemporary theologians Sri Aurobindo
Ghose and Bernard Lonergan with respect to their understandings of knowledge, consciousness
and religious conversion. Each author has a metaphysics, a theory of knowledge, and a theory of
religious conversion. Special interest is focused on the connection between the unconscious, the
emotions and religious conversion in each author. In the case of the Lonergan school, the interest
is in the criticism and re-elaboration of Jungian psychology so as to permit an opening o the
transcendent God beyond the self. Aurobindo essentially rejected psychoanalysis. Instead, to the
Lonerganian psychological explanations there corresponds Aurobindo’s integral yoga as a way of
converting the psyche. To Lonergan’s metaphysics (Insight) there corresponds Aurobindo’s
speculative Life Divine.
In a more general sense, the Hindu philosopher Aurobindo represents a typically Hindu
realization of the unity of all things at the level of the cosmos, while Lonergan represents a typical
Christian contemporary search for the unity of all individual beings working together to promote
the reign of God in history (the cosmopolis). In its own context, Bernard Lonergan’s system can
be seen as a response to Kant while that of Aurobindo is a response to the Advaitic Vedanta of
Shankara.
