Evaluation Question 1
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS
AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
BOTH FILMS USE A SCHOOL SETTING, THIS
TELLS US ITS MEANT TO BE A FORMAL AND
SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN,
HOWEVER IN BOTH OF THESE FILMS,
SCHOOL IS IN FACT THE OPPOSITE, FULL OF
DECEPTION AND EVIL ADULTS! THIS
SOMEWHAT ADDS TO THE FANTASY
ELEMENT OF THE FILMS, THIS IS BECAUSE
EACH FILM PROVIDES A SENSE OF
ESCAPISM FOR THE AUDIENCE AS THIS IS
NOT YOUR 'NORMAL' EVERY DAY SCHOOL.
AS WELL AS THIS, IT TOUCHES UPON
HUMOUR BECAUSE THE WORLD IS
ACTUALLY REVERSED, THE STEREOTYPE OF
NAUGHTY SCHOOL CHILDREN, IS ACTUALLY
TAKEN ON BY THE TEACHERS WHO ARE
MEANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
CHILDREN.
MATILDA:
2. All of the
films have
one major
similarity, the
evil adult.
The
antagonist in
each film, is
an older
person who
uses and/or
dislikes the
children.
However
each of them
are very
different...
3. In A Series Of Unfortunate
Events, the antagonist is a man
who uses the children for his
own benefit, to get money and
then betrays them as an uncle.
This story line is very similar to
the one in our film as the
antagonist is also male and uses
the child to steal pens back for
himself, and then betrays him by
framing him and turning him in
the pen police, however in
ASOUE the antagonist gets
caught, compared to Ink by
which Mr. Cross gets away with
it, we decided to give Ink a more
quirky ending as most films end
with the bad guy getting caught
and so we went against the
typical codes and conventions of
a children’s film.
4. The antagonist in ASEUO looks a lot scarier than Mr. Cross in our film, we didn’t want to over exaggerate
his character and give away that he is the evil one, so we relied on other aspects of mise-en-scene rather
than just costume, instead we used lighting and dialogue to portray him as ‘odd’.
5. Miss Trunchball has the same role as Tommy, however we didn’t want to portray him as violent and
aggressive towards children, we wanted to keep the film funny and quirky so we decided to replace the
violent character trait with sly and sneakiness, this is the opposite to Miss Trunchball as she is very openly
mean to children as shown when she swings a girl around by her pig tails in front of all of the whole school.
This is different to Mr Cross as in order for us to keep the film a mystery we had to keep his operation
private, so to do this we kept it hidden in a secret room in the school that he works in.
