Question 1 nd 2 of evaluation
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS AS WELL AS REPRESENT
Megan Campbell, Kyle
Mather and Somerset
Morton
2. THE PLAN
For working into our film we looked at various films typical and
synonymous to the horror genre. These include;
-Hannibal Lecter Trilogy
-Nightmare on Elm Street
-Scream
3. CINEMATOGRAPHY
We used filter effects on the film to darken the scenes so as to
conform to conventions of a horror movie. Although we have still kept
the light effects of when we filmed which goes against classical
American horror as it dispels the limitations of movie monsters by the
spirit coming out in the daylight.
We have used a blur effect on the first shot to show how the character
is coming out of a deep sleep and also includes the audiences
confusion as to what is going on, classic of a horror that details how
the characters fate will end.
We have blurred the edges of the shots to create a dream like effect
which also limits the frame which increases the tension because it
limits what the viewer can see.
4. CASTING
Within horror films, the victims tend to be innocent, scared women.
We stick to this convention with the first victim in our opening
sequence who is a woman who becomes slowly more frightened as
she wonders helplessly through the woods.
However, we defy normal conventions of stereotypical horror films as
we have a female villain, rather than the normal male villain.
5. MISE-EN-SCENE
The woods are a classic horror movie setting, as it creates a sense of
isolation and an eerie atmosphere which we wanted to express within
this opening sequence. Although the woods are classed as a typical
convention to the horror genre, it is still effective as we still managed
to create an ominous feel to the film.
The toys were used to create a creepy feel as in classic horror film
conventions children’s toys can be twisted to make the audience feel
uncomfortable, as you are taking something pure and innocent and
making it into something sinister.
We used burn style make up to create the face of the villain, giving
her a sinister yet saddening feel when mixed with the ominous music,
children’s toys and her own childish voice.
