FILM
1896-Auguste and Louis Lumiere brothers came to Bombay to introduce
cinematography. And, Bombay became the center of India’s Hindi film
industry.
•1913- Dadasaheb Phalke, father of Indian cinema, made the first full-length
film, “Raja Harishchandra”. The first Indian film with a soundtrack was “Alam
Ara”, which premiered in 1931.
•Since the 2000’s Bollywood dance and films gained increased international
recognition due to growing NRI and Indian communities overseas. The
popularity continues to grow along with new talents.

5. BORN OF BOLLYWOOD
Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India, has a
rich and vibrant history. The term "Bollywood" itself was coined in the 1970s
as a fusion of Bombay and Hollywood. The origins of Indian cinema, however,
can be traced back even further. Here's a brief overview:
• Silent Era (1890s-1930s): India's first-ever silent feature film, Raja
Harishchandra, was released in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke, often
referred to as the "Father of Indian Cinema."
• Talkies Era (1930s-1940s): The advent of sound brought a revolutionary
change to Indian cinema. The first Indian sound film, Alam Ara, was
released in 1931.

6. BORN OF BOLLYWOOD
• Golden Age (1950s-1960s): The post-independence period saw the
emergence of Bollywood's Golden Age, characterized by socially relevant
films, literary adaptations, and melodious music.
• Masala Films (1970s-1980s): This era brought a shift towards more
commercial and formulaic cinema
.
• New Wave (1980s-1990s): The 1980s witnessed a parallel cinema movement,
also known as the New Wave or art-house films.
• Contemporary Bollywood (2000s-present): The contemporary era reflects a
mix of various genres and influences.

7. BOLLYWOOD DANCE COSTUMES
Often have intricate and elaborate:
•gold or silver work, and are enhanced with;
- Gold or Silver jewelry
•Jewelry includes; finger rings, bangles, earrings, tikka (on
hair partition), bindi (dot on forehead) and anklets.
•Dance costumes include a waist-cinching gold jewelry,
known as kamarbandh (in Hindi). Henna to hands and feet is
a popular part of dance costumes.

• These can then be broken down even further
based on their themes. There are period dramas
and romantic comedies, sci-fi action films... but
one genre that is never mentioned is movies
about friendship. While they are not as talked
about as other genres but there are plenty of
movies which have celebrated this special bond.
So what does it take to classify a movie as
being about friendship? Basically just a non-
romantic relationship needs to be at the center
of the film. Bollywood has shown friendship in
many different ways till date. Few movies show
the great sacrifices a person makes for his
friendship while few depict the everyday
scenarios that we find ourselves in with our
friends.

◦India has over 500 years of dance history. Bollywood dance style is a hybrid
in its original form.
◦The earlier dances in Bollywood films were dominated by classical dance
forms of Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Folk dances from different parts of India.
Since 1980’s Bollywood dancing style has been influenced by Western dance
styles.
◦Bollywood Dance is the name given to the dance-form used in Indian (Hindi)
films.
◦The most energetic and colorful Indian dance forms are Bhangra and Garba
(originated in the state of Gujarat, India). They merged with other dance forms
from around the world, and now is the famous Bollywood dance.

•Free Style Bollywood Dance was introduced by actor-dancer Govinda.
His style is unique as compared to other Bollywood dancers.
•Disco Dance Style was introduced by Mithun Chakraborty. He has been
the unbeaten king of dance.
• Madhu Bala, Madhuri Dixit, Sri Devi, Katrina Kaif, Shradha Kapoor to
name a few, are the best female dancers of Bollywood.
•HritikRoshan is considered the best dancer in Bollywood for his
scintillating dance moves.

18. ROLE OF MUSIC IN BOLLYWOOD FILMS
•The first audio film “Alam Ara” had seven songs.
•The film “Indra Sabha” from 1932 had 69 songs.
•Bollywood movies are not just about the story. Music is the heart of Indian
films. Lyrics and choreography are carefully synchronized.
•Songs have given Bollywood films a distinctive look as compared to the
international films. The music from movies influence music business and
dance culture.

20. Early history (1890s–1930s)
In 1897, a film presentation by Professor Stevenson
featured a stage show at Calcutta's Star Theatre. With
Stevenson's encouragement and camera, Hiralal Sen,
an Indian photographer, made a film of scenes from
that show, The Flower of Persia (1898). The Wrestlers
(1899) by H. S. Bhatavdekar showed a wrestling
match at the Hanging Gardens in Bombay.

21. Dadasaheb Phalke's silent Raja Harishchandra (1913)
is the first feature film made in India. By the 1930s, the
industry was producing over 200 films per year. The
first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931),

Bollywood still has its controversies, but not with its funding. It seems that more
than a few Bollywood films are very closely based on U.S films to the point that many
U.S screenwriters have accused film makers of copying. Seeing as how cash
strapped the industry was in the past, maybe they just didn’t have the budget to hire
writers. Regardless, the industry continues to grow at an extremely fast pace.
As an Indian film industry continues to churn out increasingly higher quality,
bigger budget films, Bollywood continues to gain exposure worldwide. With the help of
well known directors like Night Shyamylan bringing even more publicity to bollywood,
its impact in the entertainment industry will only continue to be felt.
