cinematography. And, Bombay became the center of India’s Hindi film
industry.

recognition due to growing NRI and Indian communities overseas. The
popularity continues to grow along with new talents.
5. BORN OF BOLLYWOOD
Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India, has a
rich and vibrant history. The term "Bollywood" itself was coined in the 1970s
as a fusion of Bombay and Hollywood. The origins of Indian cinema, however,
can be traced back even further. Here's a brief overview:
• Silent Era (1890s-1930s): India's first-ever silent feature film, Raja
Harishchandra, was released in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke, often
referred to as the "Father of Indian Cinema."
• Talkies Era (1930s-1940s): The advent of sound brought a revolutionary
change to Indian cinema. The first Indian sound film, Alam Ara, was
released in 1931.
6. BORN OF BOLLYWOOD
• Golden Age (1950s-1960s): The post-independence period saw the
emergence of Bollywood's Golden Age, characterized by socially relevant
films, literary adaptations, and melodious music.
• Masala Films (1970s-1980s): This era brought a shift towards more
commercial and formulaic cinema
.
• New Wave (1980s-1990s): The 1980s witnessed a parallel cinema movement,
also known as the New Wave or art-house films.
• Contemporary Bollywood (2000s-present): The contemporary era reflects a
mix of various genres and influences.
7. BOLLYWOOD DANCE COSTUMES
Often have intricate and elaborate:
•gold or silver work, and are enhanced with;
- Gold or Silver jewelry
•Jewelry includes; finger rings, bangles, earrings, tikka (on
hair partition), bindi (dot on forehead) and anklets.
•Dance costumes include a waist-cinching gold jewelry,
known as kamarbandh (in Hindi). Henna to hands and feet is
a popular part of dance costumes.
8. CHARACTERISTICS OF
BOLLYWOOD FILM
The five basic characteristics of Bollywood cinema.
• Bollywood movies are long
• Bollywood movies are colorful
• Bollywood movies have repetitive plots
• Bollywood movies have a lot of music and dancing
• Bollywood movies always have a happy ending
9. EXAMPLE:
• These can then be broken down even further
based on their themes. There are period dramas
and romantic comedies, sci-fi action films... but
one genre that is never mentioned is movies
about friendship. While they are not as talked
about as other genres but there are plenty of
movies which have celebrated this special bond.
So what does it take to classify a movie as
being about friendship? Basically just a non-
romantic relationship needs to be at the center
of the film. Bollywood has shown friendship in
many different ways till date. Few movies show
the great sacrifices a person makes for his
friendship while few depict the everyday
scenarios that we find ourselves in with our
friends.
FRIENDSHIPS

featured a stage show at Calcutta's Star Theatre. With
Stevenson's encouragement and camera, Hiralal Sen,
an Indian photographer, made a film of scenes from
that show, The Flower of Persia (1898). The Wrestlers

match at the Hanging Gardens in Bombay.

26. NEW BOLLYWOOD (1990s- present)
• The Indian film industry has been around since the early 1900s, but a significant
change occurred in the 1990s.
• The dominance of Bollywood films was challenged by an influx of Hollywood
productions with their lavish budgets and star-studded casts.
• This shift led to new styles in filmmaking that have taken hold over the last
decade.
• Films from this era are characterized by increased use of special effects, brighter
colors, and faster pacing than those from earlier periods.
• With technology changing so rapidly, it is hard to predict what future trends may
emerge as we move further into this century.
• These changes will likely be reflected on screen for decades to come.
• The 1990s and 2000s are often considered to be the golden age of Bollywood.
• With a massive influx of new actors, directors, producers, and musicians in the
industry, many films were made that changed Indian cinema forever.

PHILIPPINE POPULAR CULTURE
Bollywood films have had a considerable impact on Philippine popular
culture. Here are some effects that Bollywood films have had on the
Philippines:
1. Cultural Exchange: Bollywood films have facilitated cultural exchange
between India and the Philippines. Through these films, Filipinos have been
exposed to Indian traditions, music, dance forms like Bollywood dance, and
various aspects of Indian culture.
2. Fashion and Style: Bollywood films have influenced Philippine fashion
and style trends. The colorful and vibrant costumes worn by actors and
actresses in Bollywood films have inspired Filipino designers and fashion
enthusiasts. Elements such as saris, lehengas, bindis, and other Indian
accessories have become popular fashion choices for special occasions
and themed events.
28. 3. Music and Dance: The catchy and upbeat music of Bollywood has made its way into
Philippine popular culture. Bollywood songs have been covered and adapted by Filipino
artists, and they are frequently played at parties, weddings, and other cultural events.
Bollywood dance routines, characterized by energetic and synchronized movements,
have also gained popularity among Filipinos, often performed in dance competitions and
social gatherings.

It's important to note that while Bollywood films have had an impact on
Philippine popular culture, they exist alongside and complement the existing local
entertainment industry. The influence of Bollywood is just one aspect of the
diverse cultural landscape in the Philippines.
Bollywood films have contributed to the diversity and richness of Philippine
popular culture by introducing elements of Indian music, dance, fashion, and
storytelling. The influence of Bollywood continues to resonate with Filipinos,
creating a bridge between the two vibrant cultures.
30. CONCLUSION
Bollywood still has its controversies, but not with its funding. It seems that more
than a few Bollywood films are very closely based on U.S films to the point that many
U.S screenwriters have accused film makers of copying. Seeing as how cash
strapped the industry was in the past, maybe they just didn’t have the budget to hire
writers. Regardless, the industry continues to grow at an extremely fast pace.
As an Indian film industry continues to churn out increasingly higher quality,
bigger budget films, Bollywood continues to gain exposure worldwide. With the help of
well known directors like Night Shyamylan bringing even more publicity to bollywood,
its impact in the entertainment industry will only continue to be felt.
