(PISA) Result of
2022. Compare

result of the
Southeast Asian
countries.
Let’s Check
Comprehension Questions:
1.Enumerate the
participating countries of
PISA?
2. Which country ranked 2nd
to the lowest?
3. What are the 3 subjects
tested in PISA?
4. In terms of percentage,
what subject got the highest
percentage in our country?
5. What is the difference
between Math and Reading in
our country, how did you get
the answer?
1. Identify statements that show
comparison and contrast.
2. Express opinions by showing
comparison and contrast.
Objectives:
Read and classify the cultural practices presented in
the text whether they reflect the culture of the
Japanese or Filipinos.
Japanese and Filipinos are often considered to
have resemblances. Sometimes, these two may
share the same qualities probably because the
Philippines was once ruled by Japan. However, if
you observe at them intensely, you will notice
that they too have unique qualities.
The Japanese are known to use
chopsticks while Filipinos make use of
spoon and fork when eating. With regards
to greetings, the Japanese people usually
bow to their elders. In contrast, Filipinos
greet their family and friends through hugs
and kisses or “beso-beso”.
In the conduct of weddings, Filipinos
usually follow Western traditions and
indulge in lavish celebrations. Contrary to
this, the Japanese are more conservative in
their weddings. They wear traditional
costumes and conduct tea parties as part of
their celebration.
You see, the Japanese and the Filipinos
really have unique practices. They may
share similar practices but if you observe
them intensely, you will still discover
more.

1. What does the term
“comparing” mean?
2. What does “contrasting’ idea
mean?
Comparing, refers to the
process of identifying the
similarities between two
things. On the other hand,
contrasting refers to
identifying only the
differences between two
things.
In writing, these processes
could be presented with the
use of TRANSITION WORDS
or GRAMMATICAL SIGNALS
specific for each process.
Some transition words for explaining what two things
have in common include:
in the same way likewise similarly
also in the same
manner
same as
as well as both like
1. In Japan, bowing is a
significant form of
respect. Similarly,
Filipinos also show
respect by kissing the
hands of their elders.
2. Filipinos as well as
Indians, embrace the
concept of joint or
extended family as a
way to survive stress
and other pressures
in life.
3. Fasting is an integral part of Hindu culture. In the
same manner, our Arabian brothers and sisters regard
it as a very important religious practice in their lives.
Example:
Transition words or grammatical signals that are often put
into use when showing differences. Some of them include the
following:
in contrast conversely dissimilarly
however on the other hand but
nevertheless contrary to although
yet while at the other end of
the spectrum
1.The cow in the
Indian culture is
viewed as a holy
animal while other
countries see it as a
staple food.
2. A career in the
military earns one a lot
of respect from
everyone. On the other
hand, soldiers tend to
experience severe
depression most of the
time.
Examples:
3. Both vegans and
vegetarians avoid the
consumption of meat.
However, the former also
4. Everyone expects life
to go smoothly all the
time although the
truth is, it is filled with
constant ups and
downs.
5. Feminism is on the rise now but so is
resistance to it.
The secret in crafting a good compare-and-
contrast essay is to choose two or more
subjects that connect in a meaningful way.
The purpose of showing similarities and
differences is not to present the obvious but
rather to highlight subtle differences or
unexpected similarities.
Spot the Similarities and Differences!
Directions: Read both paragraphs about how Jose and Maria celebrated
their birthdays. Compare and contrast the two by using a Venn
Diagram.
JOSE
On my birthday, I went on a
horseback trail ride with
friends. We rode for an hour,
then stopped for a picnic
lunch. We had a cake, and I
opened a few small presents
they had brought with them.
MARIA
On my birthday, I had a
party! Six friends came over, and
we played games. Then we had a
cake and ice cream and I opened
presents. I had one huge present
from my parents. It was a bicycle!
LOOK FOR THE SIGNALS!
Directions: Read the selections that follow and list down
transition words used to show comparison or contrast. A clue is
given for you on how many grammatical signals are present in
each item.
Example:
The gender of the instructor affected the extent of active student
participation. In classes taught by men with roughly equal proportions of male
and female students, male students were responsible for about 75% of all class
discussion. Similarly, with women as instructors, female student participation
rose from 25% to 42%; in contrast, male participation slipped from 75% to
58%. (2 signal words)

1. Africa is truly a land of contrasts. It has the greatest
desert area in the world, yet has thousands of square
miles of coastline and it has desperate need for harbors. It

of the most dreaded diseases. (2 signal words)

your answers. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
Bullying is a common occurrence in
schools, and those who fall prey to bullies
often feel that they must work it out on
their own because admitting to it would
invite more abuse or make them appear
weak. Some children—and even adults —
withdraw into their own worlds, perform
poorly in school, and even take their own
lives because of the experience.
The recorded incident is not the only
instance of bullying in Ateneo, or anywhere.
In countless environments, with children
and adults alike, there are always those who
feel they must look, sound and act strong all
the time by flaunting their power over
others. By all means, they should not be
tolerated. The bullied should be empowered
to stand up to their oppressors.
It is in the home that children first get
educated on how to protect and assert
themselves. It’s a tough world out there. The
good news is, we don’t need be as low and as
coarse and as dirty to survive. We only have
to be decent—and firm.
1. Do you have similar idea with the author? Why
or why not?
