Rationale
Students can employ a variety of mathematical models, methods, and strategies to
respond to mathematical items. Many students use a combination of strategies. During
this lesson, students will share and employ strategies and begin considering how they can
most efficiently respond to assessment questions.
Students need to explore using different strategies for each style of item they will
encounter on the PARCC. Students need to investigate type I, type II, and type III
problems which will be found on the PARCC test.
Goals
To provide the opportunity to complete the different types of items that will appear on the
PARCC assessment.
To complete a pencil/paper version of technology-enhanced items.
Content Standard
F-BF.3:Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x+
k) for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the
graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph
using technology
A-SSE.1.a.Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients.
F-BF.1. a Determine an explicit expression, a recursive process, or steps for calculation
from a context.

Scoring Sheet
Procedure
Pass out the Item Types on the PARCC worksheet. Explain that there are three different
types of items on the PARCC test, Type I, Type II, and Type III items.
Read the chart with the Type I items description. They are machine scored and will be
worth 1 point, 2 points, or 4 points each. Type I items may also have multiple parts.
Review the example of the Type I item. This item is taken directly from the PARCC
website. Discuss with students how this example fits into the category of a type I item.
Point out to students this is a 2-point item.

Point out to students this is a 3-point item.
Read the chart with the Type III items description They are machine and hand scored and
will be worth 3 or 6 points.
Review the example of the Type III item. This item is taken directly from the PARCC
website. Discuss with students how this example fits into the category of a type III item.
Point out to students this is a 6-point item.
Place students into small groups and complete the three sample problems.
Once all students have completed the problems, have groups switch work and use the
scoring sheet to score each other’s items.
Teacher & Teachers’ Aide Observations During the Group Work
Be sure to circulate the classroom and monitor students while they are solving the problems. Try
to observe the following and note the information:
Are students sharing their reasoning and strategies?
Are the students rounding the answers correctly?
Which problem was the most challenging? The least challenging?
Are students using math vocabulary in their discussion?
Check for Understanding
Have students reflect upon this experience by generating a class discussion of responses
and strategies used.
Follow up
Constructed-response is a solution style that needs to be reinforced throughout the year
across the domains. You may wish to use items such as these as Do Now problems.

PARCC Algebra I Item Types

Many students use a combination of strategies. During this lesson, students will share and employ strategies and begin considering how they can most efficiently respond to assessment questions. Students need to explore using different strategies for each style of item they will encounter on the PARCC. Students need to investigate type I, type II, and type III problems which will be found on the PARCC test. Goals To provide the opportunity to complete the different types of items that will appear on the PARCC assessment. To complete a pencil/paper version of technology-enhanced items. Content Standard F-BF.3:Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x+ k) for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology A-SSE.1.a.Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients. F-BF.1. a Determine an explicit expression, a recursive process, or steps for calculation from a context. Materials Item types on the PARCC Type I, II, and III Items Worksheet Scoring Sheet Procedure Pass out the Item Types on the PARCC worksheet. Explain that there are three different types of items on the PARCC test, Type I, Type II, and Type III items. Read the chart with the Type I items description. They are machine scored and will be worth 1 point, 2 points, or 4 points each. Type I items may also have multiple parts. Review the example of the Type I item. This item is taken directly from the PARCC website. Discuss with students how this example fits into the category of a type I item. Point out to students this is a 2-point item. They are both machine and hand scored. They can be worth 3 or 4 points each. Review the example of the Type II item. This item is taken directly from the PARCC website. Discuss with students how this example fits into the category of a type II item. Point out to students this is a 3-point item. Read the chart with the Type III items description They are machine and hand scored and will be worth 3 or 6 points. Review the example of the Type III item. This item is taken directly from the PARCC website. Discuss with students how this example fits into the category of a type III item. Point out to students this is a 6-point item. Place students into small groups and complete the three sample problems. Once all students have completed the problems, have groups switch work and use the scoring sheet to score each other’s items. Teacher & Teachers’ Aide Observations During the Group Work Be sure to circulate the classroom and monitor students while they are solving the problems. Try to observe the following and note the information: Are students sharing their reasoning and strategies? Are the students rounding the answers correctly? Which problem was the most challenging? The least challenging? Are students using math vocabulary in their discussion? Check for Understanding Have students reflect upon this experience by generating a class discussion of responses and strategies used. Follow up Constructed-response is a solution style that needs to be reinforced throughout the year across the domains. You may wish to use items such as these as Do Now problems.
