2. Why Set Goals?
Getting into the habit of setting“well formed”goals so that you are sure about
the“What”,“How”and“Why”is the surest way to turn dreams into reality.
In order to hit a bullseye, an archer needs to know where the target is. Being
clear about where you are aiming is the first step to positive change and
development.

Having A PROCESS for setting your goals will enable you to coach yourself and
make the goals“stick”.
What follows is A PROCESS that is simple yet effective. Ask yourself the
questions and be honest about the answers. If you find this difficult, ask
someone else to ask you the questions.

OK, what do i want? What do i REALLY want and how is this new or
different to what I have now?
How is this, a good thing for me? What’s the“pay off”? A one
sentence that says it all. The why?

What“stuff”do I need to achieve this goal? Include: people, knowledge, money,
skills etc. I am clear about what exactly it is that I will need to accomplish this
goal.
Is this goal really mine?, how do I“own”this, how will I be able to maintain
ownership, motivation etc?
What will happen if I do not attain this goal? I am clear about the“pain”that I
will experience.
What will happen if I do? I am clear about the pleasure that I will enjoy, what
will I see, hear and feel?
How will I know I am making progress? What will I see, hear and feel? At the half
way mark etc …
Is this outcome specific enough, can I focus on this without to many
distractions? Do I need to break this down into smaller steps? If yes, start again
with smaller“chunks”.
When am I going to take the first step? What date would I want to be half way,
what date am I going to set for accomplishment of my goal?
