The most widely known form of best-first search is called
A*. It evaluates nodes by combining g(n) and h(n):
g(n): The actual cost from start node to n.
h(n): The estimation cost from the n to the goal state:
f(n) = estimated cost of the cheapest solution through n .
f(n) = g(n) + h(n) .
