1. Rule ofThirds
The rule of thirds was first written downby JohnThomas Smith in 1797. It’s a concept which
applies to the composition of an image/video. This involves dividing the image using 2
horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines (giving you 9 boxes). In this theory you should base the
main objects/components within the line of sight as shown on the diagram. The line of sight
demonstrates the way our eyes look at the information on a page , going from left to right
then down the page and across to the right corner. This right corner of the image is known as
the terminal area , here less important information is placed because it is the last place a
person glances. The centre box is know as the primary optical area. Here the main object
should be placed e.g. on a magazine artist cover their face may be here.

2. Applying it to magazine adverts
This magazine advert doesn’t completely follow the ‘rule of
thirds theory’ because the top section doesn’t contain and
band information . It is just the background of the image. The
primary optical area is filled with the bands faces which is
considered a main component.so this section of the image fits
the concept. The name of the band is one of the last things you
will see as it is towards the terminal area , this is unusual.
I couldn’t find a second Blossoms magazine but Oasis are
the same genre of music .This one fits the rule very well
firstly because according to the line of sight the name is
the first thing that the eye meets. We then scan across the
page to see the artists faces in the primary optical area.
And finally along the bottom we see headlines and a
barcode which is considered less important information.
After apply this theory I can see that not all follow the
rule, so its not a very strict guideline for the media .
