2. Ch 1 - Introduction to Artificial
Intelligence
What is AI?
It is a branch of Computer Science concerned
with the study and creation of computer
system that exhibit some form of intelligence.
OR
AI is science and engineering of making
intelligent machines especially intelligent
computer programs.
7. Applications of AI
a) Robotics
b) Cognitive Science
c) Gaming
d) Speech Recognition
e) Natural Language Processing
f) Face Detection and Recognition
g) Expert System
h) Machine Learning
8. AI Techniques
AI problems are hard to solve but there are some techniques to
solve these problems.
It is a method that exploits knowledge that should be
represented in such a way that
a) The knowledge captures generalization. We can group the
situations that share some important properties without
additional requirement of memory & updates.
b) It can be understood by people who provide it.
c) It can easily be modified to correct errors and reflect changes
in the world .
d) It can be used in many situations
9. AI Techniques
There are three important AI Techniques
a) Search- Provides a way of solving problems for which no more
direct approach is available as well as framework into which
any direct technique that are available can be embedded.
b)Use of Knowledge- Provides a way of solving complex
problems by exploiting the structure of objects that are
involved.
c) Abstraction- Provides a way of separating important features
and variation from the many unimportant one.
10. What are Agent and Environment?
An agent is anything that can perceive its environment through sensors and acts upon
that environment through effectors.
A human agent has sensory organs such as eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin
parallel to the sensors, and other organs such as hands, legs, mouth, for
effectors.
A robotic agent replaces cameras and infrared range finders for the sensors, and
various motors and actuators for effectors.
A software agent has encoded bit strings as its programs and actions.
11. The Structure of Intelligent Agents
Agent’s structure can be viewed as −
Agent = Architecture + Agent Program
Architecture = the machinery that an agent executes on.
Agent Program = an implementation of an agent function.
Simple Reflex Agents
They choose actions only based on the current percept.
They are rational only if a correct decision is made only on the basis of current precept.
Their environment is completely observable.
12. Intelligent Agents
● In artificial intelligence, an agent is a computer
program or system that is designed to perceive
its environment, make decisions and take
actions to achieve a specific goal or set of
goals.
● The agent operates autonomously, meaning it is
not directly controlled by a human operator.

14. Conclusion
In it’s short existence, AI has increased
understanding of the nature of intelligence &
provided an impressive array of application in a
wide range of areas.
It has sharpened understanding of human
reasoning & the nature of intelligence in general.
