3. What is Global Warming?
• Roger (2011) defines Global warming as an increase in the average
temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans, especially a sustained
increase sufficient to cause climatic change.
• Gope (2013) refers to Global warming as the effect of human activities that
produces the unnatural change on the climate.
• In its simplest form, it can be define as the increasing global temperature.
5. CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING
• Industrialisation
many factories use oil and fossil fuels to power their mechines
• Coal Power plants
generating electricity with coal emit greenhouse gases which trap heat in the atmosphere e.g Carbon
dioxide (Kopchick, 2009)
• Agricultural business (biofuels, deforestation and cattle producing methane).
Trees reduce Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
7. EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
(Gope, 2013)
• Rising temperatures in poles, cause ice caps to melt and this result
in sea level rising.
• High temperatures speed up evaporation creating droughts in some
areas and high rainfall in other areas.
• Hurricanes and Storms
• Biodiversity is disturbed.
• Spread of diseases
9. MEASURES TO REDUCE GLOBAL
WARMING
• Use renewable energy sources for example, solar energy, hydro electricity and
wind electricity (Bussey, 2008)
• Recycle bottles and plastics, reduce the usage of electricity and reuse bottles
and plastics.
• Plant more trees.
