2. During WWII many countries and scientists were trying to develop atomic
weapons, fearing that Hitler would create one. The United States was the
first country to succeed and use this weapon.
3. The United States created the Manhattan Project. A covert operation created to develop an
atomic bomb. In 1945, the project had about 40 factories and famous scientists such as
Enrico Fermi, and Albert Einstein working with them. That same year they succeeded in
creating the atomic bomb code-named “Fat Boy”
Hanford B-Reactor site, 1944
4. Aftermath of the damage done in Hiroshima.
Before America dropped the bomb the Allies warned the Japanese about “prompt and
utter destruction” if they would not surrender. When Japan didn’t reply Truman set the
order out to drop the bomb, “Little Boy” on Hiroshima causing about 120,000 casualties.
Hours later they dropped the “Fat Man” on Nagasaki killing around 74,000 people.
5. Damage done in Nagasaki
Because of the mass destruction the atomic bombs caused, Japan had no other
choice but to surrender. They surrendered on August 15, 1945, a day known as V-J
Day.
