The lesson was taught to a grade 10 classroom, it was about the different parts of speech. I first gave clarity in the classroom between parts of speech and figures of speech since many learners tend to confuse the two. We agreed that parts of speech are different words in a sentence, and figures of speech are defined as how you speak those words. I went futher as to give a general example of the two words. Example was about two identical, luxury cars in a garage. Both the cars have engines regardless of the model. Parts of speech act as the parts of the car that makes it to move and figures of speech can be regarded as the extras in the luxury car. A car can move without those luxuries but makes the journey more pleasurable. In this lesson, we learned about 6 different parts of speech, namely; Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Interjections. Nouns: A word which names a person, place, object, feeling or idea. The phrase engin acts as a noun since it's the name of the garage. Verbs: Verbs are doing words. Musa is dancing with his colleagues, dancing is the verb because it's what is being done. Adjective: A word which supplies more information about a noun. They describe the noun. The fat man eats a muffin. FAT plays as the phrase that supplies more information about the man Conjunction: Joint-up-words The main road is joined to the garage route Example: Sam filled the tank because it was empty Preposition: A word that shows the relationship of one thing to another. Steve works at a garage. His friend Sam works with him Interjection: A word which conveys an emotion and which is usually part of spoken English. Godfrey stretched his leg so much that it hurts. – Cars may be from a same Model and be the same, but it's different how people portray them.
– In a sentence how perceives parts of speech and figure of speech is not the same, they might sound similar but they are
not. They also do not play the same role in the English context.
