After a few weeks of observation and interaction with the elementary students here at Building
Hope Community Life Center, I found that there was a need for a program that would encourage
group cohesion, team building skills, and positive socialization amongst the staff, authority
figures, and their peers. Basketball, is a sport that emphasizes team building and allows the
players to work together to not only solve problems on the court but issues that they may be
experiencing at home as well. This proposal will outline who will participate, when we will hold
practice and games, and some possible outcomes this program will have on the youth at Building
Hope.
Who: Boys and girls from the 1st -5th grade; Three male volunteers from the High School
chapter of Building Hope were selected by Mr. Troy to aid Ms. Jessica and I with the
demonstration and teaching of the skills, as well as to officiate our weekly games.
When: Each Wednesday we will have a skills prep practice where were will learn the basic skills
of basketball from passing, lay ups, free throws, etc; Each Friday we will play full fledge games
utilizing the skills that we learned during the beginning of the week.
Where: 5pm on Wednesdays and Fridays at Building Hope Community Life Center
Why: To provide a positive outlet for the young men of Building Hope to fellowship and create
lasting bonds with others that they can relate to and help each other succeed not just in school but
in life.
Some supplies that we will need in order to ensure the success of this program are,
- 5 off color practice jerseys; to use during our center wide games
- Gatorade and healthy snacks for the participants after games and practices
- Guest speakers.
An upcoming event that I would like to host at Building Hope, would be a Thanksgiving/
Gobble Fest basketball tournament on November 30th, between the staff and youth, as well as a
community wide youth tournament where the team at Building hope would be able to compete
against other community teams from around Greenville, NC. I would like to utilize this
tournament to promote programs that we offer at Building Hope, as well as, give the youth an
opportunity to practice their socialization skills with others from their communities. I would also
like to be able to give out a basketball related item to the winning team such as a basketball, T-
shirts, game pointers, nets, etc.

All in all, I believe that this program would be beneficial to the young men at the center
and community wide.
