9. “Technology is neither good nor bad in itself, nor can it
dictate educational goals. A pencil can be used to write
Shakespearean sonnets or copy homework. The
Internet can be used to engender enlightenment or
hatred.
Before we can embrace any new technology, we need
to declare our educational goals and demonstrate how
a particular technology can help us to achieve them.“
Howard Gardner - Developmental Psychologist and developer of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory.

Editor's Notes
Welcome and Introductions
You have been preparing for the Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE) certification through the ‘Teaching with Technology ‘ (TwT) professional development program.
This program is made up of two parts, ‘Core’ and ‘Consolidation’.
Core content:
The TwT e-learning provides a strong foundation for you as educators, by placing technology in the context of teaching and learning. I am sure you will now be more aware of integrating technology into your teaching practice.
Consolidation content:
The TwT consolidation element will be delivered via a number of workshops They have been designed to build upon the e-learning and support your progression, to deepen your understanding and further embed new practice within your classroom.
In the workshops we will:
Discuss the core concepts that have been highlighted in the e-learning
Participate in practical activities
Refer to supporting tutorials
The e-learning course we are considering today is How do Technology and Pedagogy Mix?
A thought-provoking question –
The focus throughout this e-learning course has been the consideration of an appropriate set of technology tools, and to match effective tools with specific lesson objectives. Moreover, aligning these with students’ needs.
We have seen by choosing the right digital tools and information, you can cater for students’ different approaches to learning, make effective presentations, and manage just-in-time or unplanned teaching and learning moments, while extending the value of digital resources both within and beyond the classroom.
The emphasis has been on being able to identify appropriate technologies to match teaching activities and aims.
To consolidate the knowledge you have developed through the e-learning we are now going to consider the units within the course and start to deliberate and experiment with the possibilities of embedding these ideas into your own classroom practice.
The first unit we are building upon is ‘Exploring Digital Technologies to Support Didactic Teaching’
How can technology support educators’:
Instruction?
Demonstration?
Explanation?
Discussion:
Elicit what hardware and software the educators are currently using
Develop the conversation around how they may be currently using those tools to provide greater clarity to students by:
presenting learning objectives and content
assessing understanding
reiterating what students have learned
Recap on the focus of the topic –
The first topic focused on the features of today’s classrooms, and considered the digital tools that can enhance more didactic teaching methods.
It looked at the nature of didactic teaching and the activities and challenges for an educator adopting a didactic teaching model.
It also considered how ICT tools can enhance such approaches.
A powerful tool that can enhance didactic teaching methods is PowerPoint.

Note: If the participants cannot complete the Consolidation Activity within the workshop timeframe encourage them to continue and complete in their own time. Referring them to the appropriate Educator Tutorial.
There are seven Educator Tutorials to support the Consolidation Activity
Encourage the participants to select and review one or two tutorials that would not just match their current skills level, but rather those that stretch and aid their professional development.

Recap on the focus of the topic –
The second topic identified different kinds of learning objectives, including:
Knowledge-based learning objectives – focusing on what students should know e.g. factual, moral, social and natural knowledge
Understanding-based learning objectives – focusing on what students should understand e.g. how osmosis or the electoral system works
Application-based learning objectives – focusing on what students should be able to do e.g. use a scientific calculator, conduct an experiment or a survey
It highlighted the most appropriate ICT tools to meet these objectives.
Moreover it considered the role of ICT in supporting and extending the different learning styles adopted by students
Different types of learners have unique learning styles. These include the different types of intelligences defined by Gardner.
You should use ICT resources to support all these learning preferences.
Discussion:
Develop the conversation around their thoughts or experiences of utilising ICT resources to support a specific learning preference.
Note: Through your discussion reference - ‘Multiple Intelligences Theory - ICT Applications’
Let us now put this into practice by evaluating some Web Tools and Apps

Note: The tutorials are embedded within this Consolidation Activity.
Note: If the participants cannot complete the Consolidation Activity within the workshop timeframe encourage them to continue and complete in their own time referring them to the appropriate Educator Tutorial.
Recap on the focus of the topic –
The third topic explored how ICT can be successfully integrated within teaching and learning by both educators and students.
It highlighted the development of educators’ and students’ ICT skills depends on two key factors:
The maintenance of functioning ICT systems (hardware and network)
A well-considered ICT development plan that ensures good training opportunities for staff, as well as regular learning opportunities for students
Moreover it identified that In order to make the most of existing ICT resources, there is a need for enthusiasm, commitment, and the active participation of educators.
Taking this active participation of educators a step further, this is when they start to create teaching resources of their own!
When you create a teaching resource that is your own, you can’t help but feel a sense of commitment to it – you have actively participated in its creation!
Moreover, when you start to create your own resources you can begin to incorporate elements that not only suit your teaching style but the learning styles and abilities of your students.
