8. The River of Dreams
by Billy Joel
The song "River of Dreams" by Billy Joel is a metaphor for
a journey of rediscovering himself and/or pulling
something out of himself that he previously lost. Helpful
lines in this song are the recurring lines "In the middle of
the night/I go walking in my sleep. Sleep walking usually
occurs, and the person asleep is totally incognizant of what
is happening.
9. When things like this happen, it seems like they can't do
anything about it, and it's just an instinct that makes it
happen. The fact that Billy Joel says that he does all these
things while not aware of it, it shows that internally, he
can't stop himself. This suggests his mental struggle with
what he is trying to overcome.
10. The journey shows a progression of where he started, to
where he ends up--the River of Dreams. Billy Joel begins
"From the mountains," goes "Through the valley of fear,"
"through the jungle of doubt," "Through the desert of
truth," and finally ends up in the ocean. This progression is
an indication of the struggles that he went through, but he
ultimately ends up in the ocean.
11. To many people, the ocean can represent freedom. Being
able to freely swim around in the water, and not dried up
in the desert, stranded on a mountain, caught in a valley or
a jungle, shows difference in ideas that Billy Joel ultimately
let himself to believe.
12. Connecting the two ideas, I think what Billy Joel is trying to
say is that in people's lives, things will happen, sometimes
unknowingly, and people will have to cope with it.
However, although the struggles that are faced, things such
as instincts and the idea of just going along with the
journey, will help one to discover the ocean that they're
ultimately trying to reach.
