1. The Service for The Lord’s Day
June 5, 2022
11:00 am Worship Service
Pentecost and Conϔirmation Sunday
Grace and peace. We believe God loves everyone without exception. All are welcome here.
Our mission is to experience the love of Jesus Christ by practicing
radical hospitality, forming deep relationships, and joining in shared ministry.
Jan Richardson, “Fire and Breath”
The artist writes: “The celebration of Pentecost beckons us to keep breathing. It challenges us to keep
ourselves open to the Spirit who seeks us. The Spirit that, in the beginning, brooded over the chaos
and brought forth creation; the Spirit that drenched the community with ϐire and breath on the day of
Pentecost: this same Spirit desires to dwell within us and among us. Amidst the brokenness and chaos
and pain that sometimes come with being in community, the Spirit searches for places to breathe in us, to
transform us, to knit us together more deeply and wholly as the body of Christ, and to send us forth into
the world.”

WELCOME TO FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ASHEVILLE
Welcome! We hope that you experience the boundary-breaking love of Jesus Christ in our
worship service and in our ministries.
If you are interested in learning more about FPCA, including membership, sharing a
prayer request, or a pastoral concern, please ϐill out a card from the back of the pew, or go
to our website and click Connect With Us. We welcome new members on the third Sunday
of the month. The next opportunity to join is June 19, at 9:45.
Worship bags are available in the narthex for children. The 11 am service is streaming in
the Widman Room (Rm 107), down the hall from the narthex, for anyone who may need
to leave the sanctuary. Nursery is available for children through kindergarten, and older if
necessary. If you need assistance, please ask an usher for directions to the Children’s Hall.
For worship, masks are required in the balcony and in the marked pews near the
entrances. They are required for all children’s events and rooms for ages 3+. Small groups
choose within themselves, according to their needs. Masks are optional.
The Chancel Flowers are given to the Glory of God and in Celebration of our 51st
Anniversary by Evelyn and Olin Jarrett.

Rejoice!
Come, let us worship God.
This Flor Peeters organ
piece is a setting of a
plainsong chant dating
from the earliest days
of Christianity. The text
is thought to have been
written in the 9th century.
Before and after the playing
of this modern organ
setting, the men of the choir
will chant portions of the
original plainsong with text
translated by John Cosin in
1627.

I trust in God, who is love.
God is the creator of all things, no matter how big or small;
God’s love is all around, everywhere at once.
I have seen God through people, friends, and family.
I trust in Jesus, who is Lord and Savior.
Jesus lived as our example of loving our neighbors and caring for others;
He is the living embodiment of God, who died to save us.
I am ready to work through his words to learn how to think, love,
And live more like how he intended me to.
I trust in the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit surrounds and comforts us,
Guiding us in the right direction, always with us,
Helping to show us the way through the mess of this world.
God loves and nurtures the Church, calling us to share in God’s mission.
I’m glad to know I’m a part of a community that loves me and others.
The church is called to encourage every person:
to live and carry out God’s work in the world,
to seek to rid the world and itself of injustice,
and to serve as a welcoming and afϐirming community
for people to explore their faith and to worship God.
I love our church community because it feels safe and like a family.
Love is why we forgive each other
And why our faith community is so strong,
Not only do I have a community of loving energy here,
I have loving energy wherever I go because of it.
I look forward to serving Christ through the church.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
This responsive Afϔirmation
of Faith uses pieces of the
faith statements written by
the Conϔirmands.
Our Conϔirmation Ministry
typically serves eighth
and ninth graders, and
was expanded this year
to serve older youth who
had not been through the
Conϔirmation process in
previous years due to the
pandemic. Conϔirmands
explore baptismal promises
and discern their faith
in Jesus Christ within the
context of caring and
supportive relationships
with one another, church
leaders, and mentors.
Over the past four months,
Conϔirmands met on
eight Sunday mornings
in addition to a weekend
retreat, in order to ask and
wrestle with deep questions
about the Bible, the Triune
God, the Church (universal
and FPCA in particular),
our denominational
structure and theology,
church membership, and a
life of faith in Jesus Christ.

CĔēċĎėĒĆęĎĔē QĚĊĘęĎĔēĘ
Relying on God’s grace,
do you turn from the ways of sin
and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do.
Do you turn to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,
trusting in his grace and love? I do.
Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple,
obeying his word and showing his love? I will, with God’s help.
Will you devote yourself to the church’s teaching and fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and the prayers? I will, with God’s help.
PėĊĘĊēęĆęĎĔē Ĕċ BĎćđĊĘ Joanne Bartsch and Mentors
*BđĊĘĘĎēČ
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
Remember your baptism and know you are God’s beloved.
May the Lord make His face to shine upon you.
May the Lord give you comfort and peace.
Remember in life and death, you are Christ’s own.
May the Lord challenge and convict you,
guard and guide you,
as the power of the Holy Spirit is at work within you. Amen.
These questions mirror
those asked at baptism.
Conϔirmands have been
meeting with their
mentors to foster healthy
relationships, discuss their
own stories of faith and
doubt and discernment,
work on statements of
faith, and experience
and discuss a worship
service in another faith
community and tradition.
We are so grateful to these
mentors, to the families
of the Conϔirmands, and
the congregation of FPCA,
for your prayers, love, and
support.
On May 31, Conϔirmands
met with the FPCA Session -
along with family members
and mentors - to share a
meal, their statements of
faith, and their hopes for
living faithfully as Christ’s
disciples and as members
of FPCA.

We are glad you worshiped here today.
We believe God loves every person without exception. As followers of Christ, we strive to be a holy community
that reϐlects the diversity of God’s creation through the welcome and full participation of every age, ability,
socioeconomic status, family background, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, skin color, and racial identity.
We lament the history of exclusion in the church. We rejoice in the wholeness that comes when we are all in
relationship together. We invite you to join us in ministry at FPCA.
