The Service for The Lord’s Day
October 9, 2022
11:00 am Worship Service
Eighteenth Sunday of Pentecost
Grace and peace. We believe God loves everyone without exception. All are welcome here.
Our mission is to experience the love of Jesus Christ by practicing
radical hospitality, forming deep relationships, and joining in shared ministry.
A Prayer of Preparation for Worship
To your name, Lord Jesus,
help me to bow the knee and all its worshiping,
bow the head and all its thinking,
bow the will and all its choosing,
bow the heart and all its loving. Amen
First Presbyterian Church 2
WELCOME TO FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ASHEVILLE
Welcome! We hope that you experience the boundary-breaking love of Jesus Christ in our
worship service and in our ministries.
If you are interested in learning more about FPCA, including membership, sharing a
prayer request, or a pastoral concern, please fill out a card from the back of the pew, or go
to our website and click Connect With Us. We welcome new members on the third Sunday
of the month. Our next time to join will be next Sunday, at 9:45 am, in the Library.
Worship bags are available in the narthex for children. The 11:00 am service is streaming
in the Widman Room (Rm 107), down the hall from the narthex, for anyone who may
need to leave the sanctuary. Nursery is available for children as necessary. If you need
assistance, please ask an usher for directions to the Children’s Hall.
For worship, masks are required in the balcony and in the marked pews near the
entrances. They are required for all children’s events and rooms for ages three and older.
Otherwise, masks are optional.
The Chancel Flowers are given to the glory of God.

Declaration of Forgiveness
Siblings in Christ, declare with me the good news of the gospel:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!
Hear the teaching of Christ:
I give you a new commandment,
that you love one another as I have loved you.
Call to Confession
We come before God not as despised sinners,
but as beloved children.
With the confidence of children of God,
let us humbly confess our sin.
Prayer of Confession
Eternal God,
in whom we live and move and have our being,
whose face is hidden from us by our sins,
and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: Cleanse us from all
our offenses,
and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires,
that with reverent and humble hearts
we may draw near to you,
confessing our faults,
confiding in your grace,
and finding in you our refuge and strength;
through Jesus Christ your Son.
(Silent prayer of confession)
First Presbyterian Church 4
If children find it
challenging to participate
in the entire service, they
are invited to the nursery
during the “Passing of
the Peace.” A nursery
representative
will be in the narthex to
greet you.
Children’s Moment
*Passing of the Peace
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Sung Response
*Hymn 588 Alleluia JOYFUL ALLELUIA
First Presbyterian Church 5
*Sung Response Gathered in God’s Name
(Cantor sings verse; Congregation sings the following refrain.)
First Presbyterian Church 6
RESPONDING IN FAITH
*Hymn 316 Where Charity and Love Prevail TWENTY-FOURTH
Philippians 2:5-11
*Affirmation of Faith
Christ Jesus,
though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess to the glory of God:
Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen
Sermon The Flow of Love and Joy Rev. Guy Sayles

Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory forever. Amen
Stewardship Moment Zeb Potter and Reese Carlton
“We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” (Adapted from Philippians. 4: 13)
Just who is the “WE”?
WE are a community of faith, who, through Christ, live joyfully, even on difficult days. WE
are folks who, through Christ, marshal resources – our time, talent, and treasure – to give
life to our church’s ministries, to reach deeply into communities that we currently serve,
and to prayerfully consider how best to leverage new resources that flow to us, through
us, and then on to others.
In the next few weeks, you will receive your stewardship packet in the mail. Be on the
look out for your packet and consider how you will “BE a Part of the WE.”
Anthem Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether Harold W. Friedell
Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; For when humbly, in thy name,
two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment’s hem.
As disciples used to gather in the name of Christ to sup,
then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup,
Alleluia! Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up.
All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee,
that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be.
Alleluia! Alleluia! We will serve thee faithfully.
Invitation to the Offering
Let us present ourselves to God
as those who have been delivered from death to life.
Offering
To give … use the QR
code. The gifts we offer
express our stewardship
of creation, demonstrate
our care for one another,
support the ministries of
the church, and provide
for the needs of the poor.
In addition to our regular
offering, our Daily Change
Offering alleviates hunger
in our community

*Hymn 609 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow LASST UNS ERFREUEN
*Prayer of Thanksgiving
Almighty and merciful God,
from whom comes all that is good;
Your goodness created us,
Your grace sustains us,
Your patience bears with us,
Your love redeems us.
Help us to love you
and to be thankful for all your gifts,
by serving you and delighting to do your will,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

		WALDVÖGELEIN
Voluntary Allegro maestoso e vivace Felix Mendelssohn

Go now in peace to love and serve the lord.
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you
After the 11:00 am service, you are invited to fellowship on the front lawn or in the
Wallace Foyer if it rains.
We are glad you worshiped here today.
We believe God loves every person without exception. As followers of Christ, we strive
to be a holy community that reflects the diversity of God’s creation through the welcome
and full participation of every age, ability, socioeconomic status, family background,
gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, skin color, and racial identity. We lament the
history of exclusion in the church. We rejoice in the wholeness that comes when we are
all in relationship together. We invite you to join us in ministry at FPCA.

HELP NEEDED WITH CHILDREN’S CHOIR
At FPCA, we have a wonderful music program in which our youngest to our oldest

music. That is certainly something worth nurturing. We are currently looking for folks
who would be willing to provide a meal for Children’s Choir Dinner on Wednesdays at
5:15 pm. This could be home cooked or take out that you pick up. Please contact Jeremy
Roberts at jroberts@fpcasheville.org.

invited to show and share their skills. Bring gloves, hand tools, rakes, brooms and
water to drink. Meet in the circular drive by the Aston Street entrance. Contact Jane at
janelaping@sbcglobal.net if you have questions.
SATURDAY SANCTUARY IS BACK!
After two years of uncertainty and restricted ministry with our downtown neighbors, we
are delighted to step back into the more hospitable and relational face-to-face ministry of
a shared meal at lunchtime on Saturdays with our most vulnerable neighbors. Saturday
Sanctuary co-chairs are Sandy Reid and Bill Winkler.
Saturday Sanctuary returns on Saturday, October 29. Our doors will be open every
Saturday, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, through the month of March. We are having two
identical trainings for volunteers on Saturday mornings from 10:00-11:00am, October 8
or October 22. We are asking all volunteers (and prospective volunteers) to attend one of
those trainings. Contact David Germer dgermer@fpcasheville.org or mission@fpcasheville.org to be added to the
Saturday Sanctuary contact list or with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE: The church is not taking donations of goods or clothing at this time, as Saturday Sanctuary will
not offer a clothing closet this year. If you need to make donations and are unsure of where to take them, please
contact David Germer or Jamie Brady who will be glad to assist you. mission@fpcasheville.org
OCTOBER WOMEN’S STUDIES
Pastor Shannon will be leading a discussion on Barbara Taylor Brown’s Learning to
Walk in the Dark. This book provides a way to find spirituality in those times when we
don’t have all the answers. It is often in the dark times that we see God at work the best.
The book can be ordered online and is free through Kindle Unlimited. October 20, 5:30
pm. Bring a covered dish to share.
“AT THE RIVER: STRUGGLE AND GRACE IN THE SEGREGATED SOUTH”
Sunday, October 30 - 4:00 - 7:00 pm

Segregated South” Film-screening, discussion, and light dinner. Filmmaker Carolyn
Crowder, raised in Montgomery, Alabama, during the Civil Rights era, will join us to
watch and lead a discussion around her feature-length documentary. Crowder travelled
throughout the Southeast interviewing ministers, now in their 80’s and 90’s, about their
experiences and what it took to go against the racist currents during those hard days
within their local communities and congregations.
ZENTANGLE: PEN, PAPER, AND PRAYER RETURNS!
Zentangle is back on October 29, 1-4 pm. This spiritual practice is a wonderful way to
reflect on God through creativity with others. Registration instructions in the bulletin and
weekly emails.

NEW EXHIBIT IN OUR GALLERY!
Check out the new exhibit hanging in the Church Art Gallery at the top of the stairs
from the Powell Atrium. There are 96 beautiful art works on display, each created at
the Annual Church Fall Retreat, “Deeper and Wider” in Montreat. Some are parent &
child efforts, some from couples, most are single artists of every age and ability.
All are beautiful and created solely from the provided mostly recycled or thrift store
picture frames, and assorted natural materials found at peoples’ homes, and on their
walks around the area. All were created during one of four 45 minute workshops on
Saturday at the Retreat! We will have a Celebration Reception honoring the artists
soon, so keep looking for the date and time when that will happen! In the meantime,
enjoy the show!

Worship Bulletin with insert 10.09.2022.pdf

  • 1. The Service for The Lord’s Day October 9, 2022 11:00 am Worship Service Eighteenth Sunday of Pentecost Grace and peace. We believe God loves everyone without exception. All are welcome here. Our mission is to experience the love of Jesus Christ by practicing radical hospitality, forming deep relationships, and joining in shared ministry. A Prayer of Preparation for Worship To your name, Lord Jesus, help me to bow the knee and all its worshiping, bow the head and all its thinking, bow the will and all its choosing, bow the heart and all its loving. Amen
  • 2. First Presbyterian Church 2 WELCOME TO FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ASHEVILLE Welcome! We hope that you experience the boundary-breaking love of Jesus Christ in our worship service and in our ministries. If you are interested in learning more about FPCA, including membership, sharing a prayer request, or a pastoral concern, please fill out a card from the back of the pew, or go to our website and click Connect With Us. We welcome new members on the third Sunday of the month. Our next time to join will be next Sunday, at 9:45 am, in the Library. Worship bags are available in the narthex for children. The 11:00 am service is streaming in the Widman Room (Rm 107), down the hall from the narthex, for anyone who may need to leave the sanctuary. Nursery is available for children as necessary. If you need assistance, please ask an usher for directions to the Children’s Hall. For worship, masks are required in the balcony and in the marked pews near the entrances. They are required for all children’s events and rooms for ages three and older. Otherwise, masks are optional. The Chancel Flowers are given to the glory of God. Leading in Worship Today: Pastor: David Germer Guest Preacher: Guy Sayles Organist: Jeremy Roberts FPCA Chancel Choir FPCA Choristers; FPCA Cherub Choir *Please stand if able. *Hymn 331 God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand NATIONAL HYMN GATHERING IN Voluntary Adagio Felix Mendelssohn from Sonata II Welcome and Announcements Choral Introit Come, Let Us Gather Michael R. Nichols Come, let us gather now to sing praise and thanksgiving to our King. God’s love shows in everything. *Call to Worship David Germer O praise the Lord with me, Let us exalt God’s name together. Look upon the Lord and be radiant; The Lord hears, saves, and delivers! Praise the Lord. God’s name be praised.
  • 3. First Presbyterian Church 3 Declaration of Forgiveness Siblings in Christ, declare with me the good news of the gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God! Hear the teaching of Christ: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Call to Confession We come before God not as despised sinners, but as beloved children. With the confidence of children of God, let us humbly confess our sin. Prayer of Confession Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: Cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. (Silent prayer of confession)
  • 4. First Presbyterian Church 4 If children find it challenging to participate in the entire service, they are invited to the nursery during the “Passing of the Peace.” A nursery representative will be in the narthex to greet you. Children’s Moment *Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Sung Response *Hymn 588 Alleluia JOYFUL ALLELUIA
  • 5. First Presbyterian Church 5 *Sung Response Gathered in God’s Name (Cantor sings verse; Congregation sings the following refrain.)
  • 6. First Presbyterian Church 6 RESPONDING IN FAITH *Hymn 316 Where Charity and Love Prevail TWENTY-FOURTH Philippians 2:5-11 *Affirmation of Faith Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen Sermon The Flow of Love and Joy Rev. Guy Sayles HEARING THE WORD Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings First Lesson Isaiah 27:2-6 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Second Lesson John 15:1-17 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
  • 7. First Presbyterian Church 7 Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen Stewardship Moment Zeb Potter and Reese Carlton “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.” (Adapted from Philippians. 4: 13) Just who is the “WE”? WE are a community of faith, who, through Christ, live joyfully, even on difficult days. WE are folks who, through Christ, marshal resources – our time, talent, and treasure – to give life to our church’s ministries, to reach deeply into communities that we currently serve, and to prayerfully consider how best to leverage new resources that flow to us, through us, and then on to others. In the next few weeks, you will receive your stewardship packet in the mail. Be on the look out for your packet and consider how you will “BE a Part of the WE.” Anthem Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether Harold W. Friedell Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; For when humbly, in thy name, two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluia! Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment’s hem. As disciples used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluia! Alleluia! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluia! Alleluia! We will serve thee faithfully. Invitation to the Offering Let us present ourselves to God as those who have been delivered from death to life. Offering To give … use the QR code. The gifts we offer express our stewardship of creation, demonstrate our care for one another, support the ministries of the church, and provide for the needs of the poor. In addition to our regular offering, our Daily Change Offering alleviates hunger in our community

Saturday Sanctuary co-chairs are Sandy Reid and Bill Winkler. Saturday Sanctuary returns on Saturday, October 29. Our doors will be open every Saturday, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, through the month of March. We are having two identical trainings for volunteers on Saturday mornings from 10:00-11:00am, October 8 or October 22. We are asking all volunteers (and prospective volunteers) to attend one of those trainings. Contact David Germer dgermer@fpcasheville.org or mission@fpcasheville.org to be added to the Saturday Sanctuary contact list or with any questions. NEW EXHIBIT IN OUR GALLERY! Check out the new exhibit hanging in the Church Art Gallery at the top of the stairs from the Powell Atrium. There are 96 beautiful art works on display, each created at the Annual Church Fall Retreat, “Deeper and Wider” in Montreat. Some are parent & child efforts, some from couples, most are single artists of every age and ability. All are beautiful and created solely from the provided mostly recycled or thrift store picture frames, and assorted natural materials found at peoples’ homes, and on their walks around the area. All were created during one of four 45 minute workshops on Saturday at the Retreat! We will have a Celebration Reception honoring the artists soon, so keep looking for the date and time when that will happen! In the meantime, enjoy the show!
