The immune system has evolved over hundreds of millions of years in complexity from simple unicellular organisms to complex multi-cellular organisms. As organisms grew more complex, their immune systems also became more advanced to defend against infection. The vertebrate immune system inherited properties from invertebrates but developed further abilities like adaptive immunity, MHC molecules, and long term immune memory. The mammalian immune system, including the human immune system, is highly sophisticated and complex, developing before birth to recognize non-self and protect against pathogens.
