To Carolyn McDaniel, minia-
ture golf at Lakeside is more than
a simple game. She started work-
ing at the golf course 14 years
ago, and she has loved it ever
since.
McDaniel is a second gener-
ation Lakesider, and her mother
told her she’s been coming since
before she was born. Her parents
brought their church groups to
Lakeside, and even built a cottage
in 1914.
By working at the golf course,
McDaniel carries on the Lakeside
tradition for her parents.
She assigns working hours,
trains workers and ensures they
have all the supplies they need.
McDaniel cherishes the time she
spends with her young workers,
who she calls wonderful.
She loves watching them
grow up, work through col-
lege, and sometimes even
bring their own families back
to Lakeside. The progress they
make is exciting to McDaniel,
and she is a constant encour-
ager.
McDaniel admires that the
course serves as a place for fam-
ilies to spend time together with
no interruptions. She said that she
always hears laughter and encour-
agement from the golfers, and the
renovations have only added to the
excitement. People comment on
how impressed they are by the im-
provements constantly, according
to McDaniel.
“Nicest improvement to min-
iature golf in the 45 years I’ve
been playing here. My six year old
grandson even commented on the
updates,” said one Lakesider.
On and off the course, McDan-
iel loves the things mini-golf does.
She is not only able to watch fami-
lies grow and spend time together,
but she also cares deeply for her
workers.
Lakeside Chautauqua is thank-
ful for friends like McDaniel who
directly benefit from the Chautau-
qua pillars and encourage others to
do the same.

Tom Mueller, a long
time Lakesider, found that
he and his family simply
clicked with Lakeside
Chautauqua during their
first visit.
Mueller has served
Lakeside in more ways
than people can count on
two hands.
His experiences in-
clude helping with the
Midwest Birding Sympo-
sium, Property Owner’s
Manual, Capital Cam-
paign, serving on the Board
of Directors,and even
weeding at the Memorial
Garden, just to name a few.
Volunteering is sacred
to Mueller, and though it
might seem tedious to oth-
ers, he says that “it is a la-
bor of love.”
Mueller’s wife was the
second loved one placed in
The Memorial Garden at
Chautauqua Park. It is only
appropriate that she has her
ashes in Lakeside because
she “truly embodied Lake-
side.”
For the Mueller fami-
ly, the garden serves as a
spiritual anchor. The family
comes to Lakeside not only
to relax and enjoy them-
selves, but to reconnect
with each other.
When Mueller’s three
sons visit, they make a
point to go to the memorial
garden.
They bring the dog and
let it drink out of the small
trough; they talk to the other
people there, and celebrate
life at Lakeside. It “helps
the soul,” states Mueller.
Mueller realizes that
these things do not happen
without work. He believes
that “if you sincerely like
something, you do some-
thing for it.”
Lakeside does not exist
just because it is Lakeside,
it exists because people
like Tom put so much time
and love into it.
The Chautauqua experi-
ence would not be possible
without the help of all of
Lakeside’s volunteers.
Lakeside values people
like Tom Mueller and oth-
ers who devote their time
and talents.

PLAN,
continued from page 1
Through these touchpoints, the
community is identifying critical
needs and opportunities connected
with the five strategic goals. Lakesid-
ers have voiced the importance and
appreciation of the Chautauqua pro-
gram and the safety and freedom of
all visiting.
One Lakesider commented specif-
ically on Lakeside’s commitment to
the Christian principles of faith, say-
ing “There are so many other places
for families to go stay for vacations,
but only a place like Lakeside is de-
voted to encouraging spiritual growth.
This makes Lakeside a unique place
for families with young children and
also for adults of any age who want
that environment.”
Lakesiders also feel that the values
and traditions are vital to the Lakeside
experience. They also identified and
affirmed that the historic buildings
and the beautiful gardens and grounds
are important.
Another Lakesider noted, “Lake-
side maintains 47 structures and more
than 10 miles of roads, and it is im-
portant that Lakeside preserve the
historic structures and continues to
evolve.”
In addition, Lakesiders appreciate
the transparency. One Lakesider com-
mented, “Transparency is happening
today. For 140 years there was no
transparency. It cuts down the gossip
when there are forums, dessert recep-
tions and round table discussions.”
Lakeside will continue to collect
feedback over the next few months,
as well as the next two years, through
surveys, social media and blog com-
ments, community forums and round-
table discussions to develop a master
plan.
The Board will review the com-
prehensive information at upcoming
meetings to begin the development of
a master plan. The master plan will
provide a framework for sustainable
development and preservation within
the Lakeside community, including
buildings, landscape, open spaces and
infrastructure.
The development of a master plan
is a critical component for Lakeside’s
future to ensure that the design of the
grounds and facilities continue to sup-
port Lakeside’s mission and five stra-
tegic goals.
Lakeside Chautauqua will contin-
ue to provide transparency to guests
and residents by posting updates on
the website at www.lakesideohio.
