Saint George traditions and folklore
1. Saint George
Saint George is one of the most
famous saints from the orthodox
religion, it is celebrated on the 23rd
day of April, by the folklore in the
morning the head of the family had to
put green branches at the gates,
houses, windows, doors and at the
stables, gardens and tombstones, this
way they thought that their cattle,
houses and gardens are under
protection against evil forcesses.
These branches were kept throught
the year because it was thought that
using them would make the sickness
go away.
At midnight there is this tradition
called the Living Flame of Saint
George, it is said that the one that was
doing this ritual had to strip of all his
clothes and go in a place that was
unseen of others, attempting to light a
fire with two wooden pieces, if the fire
would lit then that fire was living fire
and if taken home it’d protect the
household.
On this day, women that were of the
age to marry thought if they looked
into the water they’d see their chosen
one.
These traditions might not be the
same these days but we keep
celebrating it.
