2. Who was John Lennon?
John Winston Ono Lennon was
born on 9 October 1940, in Liverpool and
was murdered in New York City, on 8
December 1980.
Best know as: an English singer,
songwriter and peace activist who co-
founded The Beatles.
3. The Quarrymen
In september 1956, Lennon, at the
age of 15, formed “The Quarrymen”, an
half skiffle and half rock and roll band.
The name of the band was given
after the school here the members studied,
the Quarry Bank High School.

During only a year, in 1960, the group change their name 5 times but, after a brief tour, they
eventually end up with the name The Beatles. By 1962, with the entry of Ringo Starr, they finally
completed their band.
In 1970, McCartney announced the Beatles break up, this all started because of the dead of their
manager, which was the only one who they respect enough to resolve all their disagreements.

5. The solo career
In 1970, together with Ono, John started his solo career. During this time he recorded the
song “Give peace a chance”, and launched their first album, “Imagine” (1971) that later become
anthems for world peace.

6. Political Activism
In 1969 he recorded the song “Give peace a chance”,
which was a referring the Vietnam war. From here, Lennon
became an anti war activist.
In 1971 John was part of a concert to release a singer
who was sentenced to 10 years after been caught in possession
of 2 joints of marijuana.
In 1972, following the Bloody Sunday in Ireland, John
wrote 2 songs protesting against the british presence and
actions in Ireland, «Bloody Sunday Bloody» and «The luck of
the Irish».
7. Deportation attempt
In 1971 John and Yoko moved to the USA. They became
friends with the anti war leaders and together they tried to
organize a concert to convince the youngest to vote against the
war, therefore vote against Richard Nixon.
The FBI started to investigate them, with the intention of
deporting them. This battle only ended in 1976, when was granted
the green card to them.
8. Death
In 8th December 1980, John was shot dead 4 times by a fan who previously had asked for an
autograph.
Mark David Chapman, the man who
killed Lennon was sentenced to life in prison.
After that John was cremated and Ono
scattered his ashes in New York's Central
Park.
