New Home proposed
for Royal Family
A memo leaked to the
press proposes that
Buckingham Palace,
the official residence
of the Queen in
London, should be
opened to tourists all
year round and that the
Queen and Prince
Philip should move to
a smaller, purpose-
built residence on the
estate. Buckingham
Palace would still be
used for official duties.
Buckingham Palace
has a staff of over a
thousand and costs
over £1,000,000 a year
to run. Moving the
Queen to alternative
accommodation could
save the government
an estimated £800,000
a year.
It is felt, says the
memo, that such an
important piece of
property in central
London could be more
economically used in a
number of ways,
notably through ratio-
nalisation of staff, bet-
ter use of police pro-
tection and, through
providing better access
for visitors, increased
tourist revenue. The
park surrounding the
Palace, says the
memo, could also be
developed to provide
additional parking
space and possibly a
luxury hotel and
leisure complex. The

SORRY, MA’AM, BUT IT’S TIME TO MOVE! We have
seen a secret memo which says the Queen doesn’t
need a royal palace with lots of servants. It costs
millions to run and London needs the space. Her
Majesty and Prince Philip can move into a luxury
flat or house locally. London can get lots of lovely
money from tourists, Londoners can have places to
park in the centre and tourists can have luxury
hotels to stay in. That’s what our specially leaked
memo says. We’ll save money – fewer servants,
fewer police. And we’ll make money – more
tourists, more parking fees and more hotel accom-
modation. And Buckingham Palace can become a
pleasure
park for
millions,
creating
thousands
of new
jobs!
What’s
wrong
with that?
MOVE THE QUEEN OUT!

Sink their boats, I say. Who am I talking about?
The Spanish pirates who are stealing our fish!
Spanish fishing boats are entering our waters.
They’re robbing our islands of fish and our fisher-
men of their jobs. They must be stopped! We defeat-
ed their Armada in 1688. Let’s beat these thieves
again now. If they come into our waters, send a
British Navy destroyer to sink them. That’s what I
say!

A Unique Union
The European Union is unique among internations. Its Twenty-seven Member States have
agreed to share a measure of sovereignty in order to develop common policies where joint action
offers benefits for all.
The objetives of the Union include:
an ever closer union of the peoples of Europe;
the constant imrpovement of living and working conditions;
concerted action to fuaranee steady expansion, balanced trade and fair competition;
Reduction in the economic differences between regions;
progressive abolition of restrictions on international trade;
overseas development;
pooling of resources to preserve and strengthen peace and liberty.
Parliamente exercises democratic control over the running of the European Union. Its 785
Members (MEPs) are elected every five years. There are 436 Members from the six most popu-
lous countries (Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland and Spain), thirty-five from
Romania, twenty-seven from the Netherlands, twenty-four from each of the following countries:
Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary and Portugal and the remainig 14 countries with
less than twenty Members each. Because the governements have not agreed on the seat of the
Union’s decision-making bodies, Parliament’s activities are based in three cities: its administra-
tion is in Luxembourg; full public sessions are usually held for a week each month in Strasbourg;
and meetings of the twenty specialist committees normally take place during two weeks of each
month in Brussels. so that Members can follow and take part in debates in their own languages,
proceedings in full sessions and in committees are interpreted simultaneously into twenty three
official tongues of the Union – English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish
and Portuguese, among others. The interpretation is also available in the public gallery.

COULD YOU HAVE ever imagined having
500 television channels trasmitting into you
home? Right now, almost every street in the
UK carry cables which, together with
, are capable of carrying hundreds of
TV stations. The same thing is happening
all over the world.
With the new channels comes the need for
new programmes to broadcast. The USA’s
for original programming in
telemovies, docudramas and documentaries is the reason so much of world TV comes from
the USA. In fact, because there are so many different channels to choose from, many of
them now concentrate on one kind of broadcasting; one cable channel for children’s pro-
grammes, another for documentaries, sports, news, films, soaps and so on.
Most european homes should be able to receive cable or satellite TV in the coming years.
This growth will be most noticeable in Spain, which will grow to over 50%. France’s Canal +
is one of the biggest pay-television operator in the world, with a subscriber base of
millions in France and abroad. The company has also established channels with other part-
ners in Belgium, North Africa, Spain and Germany. there are more problems to
consider when the Western media groups set up TV channels in regions such as Asia.
Programme tastes differ widely across continents and countries. In addition, different lan-
guages, religions, cultural differences and political censorship can cause major difficulties.
One thing is certain, it can only be a matter of time before we are all tuning in to an enor-
mous selection of TV channels at any time, on any subject and from any country. How will
this change our lives?
