This document discusses low vision, its causes, classifications, aids, and evaluation. It defines low vision as visual impairment even after treatment or correction that results in vision worse than 6/18 but has potential to use remaining vision. Common causes include albinism, high ametropia, optic atrophy, and congenital cataract. Low vision aids are classified as optical aids like magnifiers and telescopes or non-optical aids like large print and mobility canes. Conditions that benefit include albinism, CSR, high myopia, and DR. Formulas to evaluate low vision are the Kosten baun rule and Brazelton formula.
2. INTRODUTION
LOW vision has been a subject of continued
neglected for years by opthalmologist for varous
reasons.
But in reality it is only the willingness of the
professional i.e(optometrist) to take up this field to
the cause of prevention of unavoidable blindness.
3. DEFINITION
• According to WHO ‘a person with low vision is
one who has impairment of visual functioning
even after treatment, surgery, or standard
refractive correction and has a visual acuity of
less than 6/18 to light perception or a visual field
less than <10 degree from the fixation point, in
the better eye but who is potentially able to use,
vision for the planning .
4. CAUSES OF LOW VISION
• There many causes of low vision i.e.
• ‣Albinism
• ‣High Ametropia
• ‣optic atrophy
• ‣congenital cataract
5. CLASSIFICATION
• Legal blindness : It is the legal definiton used to
determine whether an individual with vision
impairment is eligible for government benefits.
• It is 6/60 or less with best correction or a visual
field of 20 degree .
6. • Economical blindness: It is defined as the visual
performance with distance visual acuity of 6/60 or
less in the better eye with best opthalmic
correction or as a defect in visual field so that the
widest diameter of vision substend an angel no
greater than 20 degree.
8. OPTICAL AIDS
• Optical aids are the devices which optically helps
to improve the vision.

9. NON -OPTICAL
• Non –optical aids are those which can improve
visual function ,for instances ,specific
illumination ,light transmission, reflection control
,enhanced contrast and linear magnification.
