2. AIR POLLUTION
DEFINITION:-
Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles, smoke or
odour are introduced into the atmosphere in a way that makes
it harmful to humans, animals and plants is called air
pollution.
3. CLASSIFICATION OF AIR POLLUTANTS
DEFINITION
Air pollutants are those particulates and gases which pollute the air in
the atmosphere that can cause harm to humans and the environment. It can
be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets or gases.
PRIMARY POLLUTANTS:-Pollutants that are emitted directly from
identifiable sources are produced both by natural events (for example, dust
storms and volcanic eruptions) and human activities (emission from
vehicles industries etc.) are called primary pollutants. Examples: CO, CO2,
Nitrogen Oxides gases, Sulphur Oxides gases, Hydro Carbons compounds
etc.
SECONDARY POLLUTANTS:- Pollutants that are produced in the
atmosphere when certain chemical reactions take place among the primary
pollutants are called secondary pollutants. Examples: Sulphuric acid, Nitric
acid, Carbonic acid, etc.
4. SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
NATURAL AIR POLLUTION
Natural air pollution are those air pollution which occurs
naturally.
For example:
Volcanic Eruption:- A volcano is a vent in the earth’s crust
through which molten rock, rock fragments, gases like CO2,
SO2 and ashes are ejected from the earth’s interior.
Forest Fires: A forest Fire is an uncontrolled fire occurring in
forest.
5. MAN-MADE AIR POLLUTION
Man-made air pollution are those air pollutions made by the
humans.
For example:
Rapid industrialization:-Rapid industry development in our
society due to which harmful gases comes out like Carbon
monoxide, Hydrogen sulphide etc.
Automobile revolution:-Rapid growth of automobiles or
vehicles in our society which leads to air pollution due to
which harmful gases comes out like carbon dioxide, nitrogen
oxides etc.
Deforestation:- Cutting downs in large number or amount of
trees in vast areas for different purposes which effects the
quality of life and climate.
6. EFFECT OF AIR POLLUTION
On Human;-
• Irritate respiratory tract
• Irritate eyes, nose, and throat
On Plants:-
• stops growth of plants
• Loss of chlorophyll and yellowing of the leaves
On Climate:- Global warming
The gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth
atmosphere gradually attributed to the green house effect
caused by increased levels of CO2 and other pollutants.
8. CASE STUDY OF TAJ MAHAL
NEW DELHI: India's white marvel, the Taj Mahal, is
slowly turning brownish-yellow because of air
pollution, says an Indo-US study which also identifies
the pollutants responsible for the effect.
It says Taj is changing colour due to deposition of dust
and carbon-containing particles emitted in the burning
of fossil fuels, biomass and garbage. The study
confirms what has been suspected for long — that
Agra's poor air quality is impacting India's most
celebrated monument
9. CONTROLS...
Planting more trees
Reducing own vehicles
Using less polluting fuels
Using public Transportation
Industrial areas should be always away from the residential
areas.
