The circulatory system transports nutrients, oxygen, water and removes wastes such as carbon dioxide throughout the body. It consists of arteries that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart with thick walls and high pressure, and veins that carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart with thinner walls and valves. The heart is located in the thoracic cavity slightly left of center and has four chambers - right and left auricles and ventricles - that pump blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs and pulmonary veins back to the heart.
