Characteristics of a good
teacher
1. Knowledge of the subject matter
You can’t teach what you don’t know.
So a teacher must be master of his
will
subject. Any weakness on his part
decrease his prestige, in the eyes of
his students. Besides, he must love
his subject and continue building
his understandings of his subject
throughout his career.
2. Patience
• No teacher should be expected to have
much patience with individuals whose lack
of discipline, immaturity, or indolence
interrupts the work of other students.
Patience with students who are trying to
learn, however, is part and parcel of the
teaching profession. Impatience with
sincere students is an indication of the
teacher’s own shortcomings
3. Intellectual curiosity
• All good teachers are intellectually curious
and naturally driven by their interests in
keeping abreast of changes in their fields.
4. Achievement
Experienced teachers have clear
thoughts on what their students
should know at the end of the term,
and they understand what they must do
along the way in order to reach those
goals.
5. Awareness
Teachers in elementary and secondary
schools must have eyes in the backs of
their heads. They need to be aware of
everything that happens in their
classrooms and in the school. Teachers
who are awake are able to stop nonsense
before it starts and keep students on track.
6. Maturity
• In no profession is maturity more important
than in teaching. Students experience
emotional ups and downs, and insightful
teachers are able to sense the changes
and respond to them appropriately.
Teachers must be pillars, consistently
encouraging students to grow as human
beings and to develop academically
7. Community involvement
Maintaining good community relations is
part of being a teacher, and
teachers’ contact with parents,
administrators, and community leaders
enhances their effectiveness in the
classroom.
8. Organization
• One-on-one tutoring is easy compared to
leading a classroom of students in a single
direction. Teachers must be able to
manage student's multiple personalities
and organize their subject matters so that
a maximum number of students benefits
from their presentations.
9. Mission
• Perhaps the most important thing teachers
communicate to students and to the
community is a sense of satisfaction with
their choice of teaching as their life
mission. Teaching at its highest level is a
calling, and good teachers feel it to their
cores .
10. Enthusiasm
• Excellent teachers never lose enthusiasm
for their profession. They might become
temporarily burdened by administrative
hassles or isolated problems, but their
underlying engagement with their work is
unwavering. Students feel this energy, and
teachers who project it are much more
successful than those who do not.
11-Ideal Character:
A good teacher should be a model
in Character. His attitude should be
praiseworthy. He should have good habits. He
should be true Muslim. He must be the
follower of Islamic Values like brotherhood,
truth, equality, and justice. It proves often
through observation that most of the
students idealize their teacher. Therefore, a
teacher should not be the victim of smoking, bad
company and wandering.
12-Balanced personality:
An ideal teacher have always a balanced
personality. He always keeps his emotions
in control. He established the atmosphere
of cooperation instead of quarrelling
with others. He chooses moderation
instead of terrorism.
13-Literary Interest:
Literary interest in one of the
characteristics of an ideal teacher. A good
teacher is always the fond of literature.
He has interest in studies. He harmonizes
his knowledge with age demands with the
help of now best newspapers , magazines,
radio and T.V. Due to extensive studies,
he can easily answer of the students out
of the syllabus also.
14-Love with teaching:
An ideal teacher always loves
his profession. He perform his
duties understanding it worship. He
knows that his profession is likely to
act upon on Sunnah. He feels pleasure
in transferring his knowledge to the
students.
15-Professional skills:
An ideal Teacher is a man
who possesses the professional skills.
He has professional education and
knows the latest teaching methods. A
good teacher always knows the teaching
skill.
16-awareness to children Growth:
A good teacher should be aware the
psychology of the children and different
stages of the growth of the children. He
must be aware of the physical, emotional,
mental and social problems of the
children. In this way, he can teach the
students effectively.
17-Teaching methods:
The latest research has introduced new ways
of teaching in educational field. In
old educational system, the teacher was the
centre of education but now a days, the
educational activities revolves around the
personality of the children. In view of
children different activity based methods
of teaching have been introduced as
activity based methods. An ideal teacher uses
the teaching method according to the ability of
the children.
18-Polite Attitude:
Politeness is another characteristics of
a good teacher. He conquers the heart of
others through his good behavior and
politeness. His students and colleagues
like him due to his politeness. Because of
it, the school atmosphere
becomes pleasant.
19-Love for profession:
The teacher should feel the importance
of his profession. He must give his
to the growth and
of the
exclusive attention
development of the personalities
children under his charge.
20- Daily preparation:
perhaps there is no type of work where
the results of poor planning are so
devastating as in teaching. Careful and
systematic arrangement of the subject
matter and the classroom activities is
conducive to creative discipline. A well
prepared lesson helps to overcome the
feeling of nervousness' and insecurity
especially in the first attempt at teaching.
21-Skill in Questioning:
The success of class teacher in the class
also depends on the art of questioning.
One who questions faultlessly, teaches
effectively. With the help of right type of
question a wise teacher can lead the
students from dark and unknown regions
to known and bright ones.
22-Use of Material Aids:
Various teaching aids bring clarity and
vividness. It is a great asset to the teacher
to narrate stories and anecdotes which
appeal to the children at different age and
attainment levels. Abstract words and
phrases can be made clear by
illustrations.
23-Good leader
A good teacher should be a
good leader and a good friend. He
should also be a disciplinarian and the
students must look up to him. However,
this should not stop him from acting like
an ally under certain situations.
24-Good Communicator:
One of the most important attribute of a
good teacher is to be a good
communicator. He should be
comfortable explaining things and enjoy
doing the same .
25-Good voice:
The voice of a teacher should be clear. A
thin low voice develops dullness in the
class. A very high pitched voice must be
avoided. It distracts the minds of the
students and does not appeal to their
aesthetic sense.
26-Good Memory:
A teacher with a poor memory ridiculous.
It becomes easier for a teacher having
good memory to correlate many things.
A good creative memory is one of
the qualities that differentiates the
good teacher from the mediocre.
27-Good Vitality:
Good vitality is essential to successful, not
only in its relax influence upon the children
but also in making possible continuity of
work with the fewest possible interruptions
from illness because of general fatigue.
28-Democratic attitude:
A teacher who is to show the way
of democracy to the students must
develop in himself a democratic attitude.
His role is of a friend, philosopher and
guide and not of a policeman.
