Antibiotic resistance has been recognized as a global health
issue. Resistant bacteria exist in humans, animals, food and
the environment, and there are no barriers to the
transmission of resistance genes across bacterial species and
compartments. Bacteria can be naturally resistant; however,
exposure to antibiotics is one of the main drivers for the
emergence and spread of resistance genes.
