This information has been put together as a service to the public from a Scientist/Mom whose son has contracted Lyme Disease, and who has effectively treated him. She knows some Stuff! 3. Borrelia burgdorferi
• the causative agent of Lyme Disease is this spirochete
• get it from a tick bite because the spirochete which lives in tick stomach
• the spirochete bores into cells where one’s immune system can’t get at it
• over time in the body it changes form to a globular bacterium, cyst and bioplasms
• the longer it goes untreated the more difficult it is to cure = CHRONIC LYME
WHAT IS LYME DISEASE?
•Borrelia burgdorferi is most commonly contracted from a tick bite, but the bacteria is also
transmitted by fleas, mosquitos, exchanging blood, needles, and from mother to child. New
information about to come out – can be transmitted sexually.

9. WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF LYME?
The bacteria causes inflammation. So symptoms vary from person to person depending on
where one is most susceptible to the effects of inflammation.
• Bulls eye rash
• Wicked tired to Severe fatigue
• Joint pain – commonly sore knees, bottom of feet
• Neurological dysfunction – brain fog and irritability
• Progressive and can become debilitating

10. WHAT ARE OTHER SYMPTOMS OF LYME
DISEASE?
• Recurring fatigue and flu-like symptoms
• Low grade fevers, ‘hot flashes’ or chills
• Night sweats
• Sore throat
• Swollen glands
• Stiff neck
• Arthritis
• Myalgia – a nervey feeling
• Chest pain and palpitations
• Abdominal pain, nausea
• Diarrhea
• Sleep disturbance
• Poor concentration and memory loss
• Photosensitivity
• Hyperacusis – hearing sensitivity
• Irritability and mood swings
• Depression
• Back pain
• Blurred vision and eye pain
• Jaw pain
• Testicular/pelvic pain
• Tinnitus
• Vertigo
• Cranial nerve disturbance
• Headaches
• ‘Lightheadedness’
• Dizziness
• Numbness and tingling
• Paralysis
• Urinary dysfunction
Borrelia likes nerves and brains, hearts and joints. Lyme Disease is often misdiagnosed
as: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's, Arthritis, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, and more,
especially in CANADA!

11. HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF AND MY KIDS?
• Average 20% of the carrier tick species carry Lyme Disease in
the west… more in BC valleys and less in Alberta…so far.
Worse in the southern parts. Moving north. All of Vancouver
Island
• 70% of Deer Ticks in the East carry Lyme Disease
• Wear long light-coloured pants in the woods so you can easily
see any tick that is there…even if it is a hot day
• Tuck your pants into your socks
• Do full naked body tick checks on each other every night
• Pets can also get Lyme and bring infected ticks into your home

12. IF YOU FIND AN EMBEDDED TICK DON’T
PANIC…BREATHE…… LEAVE IT THERE…HOW YOU TAKE IT
OFF IS VERY IMPORTANT….SO TAKE YOUR TIME
• With needle nosed tweezers, grab the tick by its nose, as close to
the skin as you can, pinch it firmly to keep stomach juices in
• Pull up gently, don’t twist. The embedded tick parts are barbed so
the skin will tent up, then it will let go
• Remove tick, place in the pill bottle, take in for analysis
• Carry needle nosed tweezers
and a small empty pill bottle in
your first aid kit
• You have to avoid squeezing the
stomach contents of the tick
(containing Lyme spirochetes)
into the person, so don’t try to
pinch it off with your fingers

13. WHAT IF THE TICK IS A CARRIER SPECIES?
• Do not wait for species identification nor for a bulls eye ring rash
to appear…. or not appear, if it looks like a Lyme carrying tick
TREAT ASAP
• Treat as quickly as possible with antibiotic Doxycycline for 3
weeks (… and stay out of the sun)
• The longer one waits before treating, the harder Lyme is to get
rid of
• Lyme can become “chronic” if not treated, then the treatment
feels worse than the disease… for a long time….years… life
time… people die of it and it is not a good way to go
• (PS ……I am not a doctor… but then…. most doctors in Canada
are not Lyme literate….yet)
