At the 6th NICE Conference in Bratislava, Slovakia, activities to foster further exchange in the future were an important aspect on May 29, 2015. To begin with, Dr Lucy Hearne from the University of Limerick (Ireland) presented the Peer-Learning Framework of NICE, a manual how to jointly develop degree programmes in career guidance and counselling, drawing on common points of reference like the European Competence Standards. Secondly, Jan Woldendorp from the Saxion University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands) presented the work and concepts of the Mobility Team of NICE, including guidelines how to organise international exchanges of staff and students. Finally, Jan Woldendorp and Prof Sif Einarsdottir from the University of Iceland prepared the stage for 9 parallel workshops on the future of cooperation in the NICE network. For further information on the conference, please visit www.nice-network.eu Dr Susanne Kraatz from the European Parliament's Policy Department on Economic and Scientific Policy presented an overview of efforts at the European level, to foster quality in lifelong guidance and counselling. On March 31, 2023 the US National Pork Board validated a study by Todd Williams, of Pipestone Veterinary Services, based on the use of high expansion nitrogen foam for the large-scale depopulation of all classes of swine, utilizing Livetec Systems Nitrogen Foam Delivery System (NFDS). The high expansion foam produced by the Livetec Systems NFDS surrounds the animal in large bubbles filled with nitrogen with a base expansion ration of between 300 and 350 to 1, as mentioned on the information provided by the producer of the firefighting foam. The Livetec technology, based on using Compressed Air Foam (CAF) filled with nitrogen instead of air for depopulating pigs, emerges within a critical landscape. The complexities of implementing effective emergency depopulation strategies for livestock, particularly swine, present multifaceted challenges. Livetec's approach relies on high expansion firefighting foam, aiming to euthanize pigs by submerging them in foam. The Livetec system's claims about the effectiveness of nitrogen-filled high expansion foam for depopulating market pigs lack substantial evidence upon analysis. The discrepancy between the actual foam produced during field trials and the promised high expansion foam, coupled with the absence of concrete proof supporting the method's efficacy, discredits the technology's claims.

The most prominent environmental harm caused by wildlife crime and related illegal wildlife trade is degradation of the world’s biological diversity through overexploitation, resulting in population reduction and extinction threats to wild species. Species diversity is a critical aspect of the functioning ecosystems that support all life on earth. The threat of species overexploitation was identified as the second most significant driver of global biodiversity loss after landuse change by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Concern about overexploitation motivates much of the national legislation affecting wildlife trade worldwide and it is the rationale for the international trade regulation measures now subscribed to by 184 states that are contracting Parties to CITES.

Wildlife trafficking impacts a very wide range of species of wild animals, plants and fungi, traded locally for domestic use and to international markets. It encompasses a diverse range of commodities, including those used for food, medicine, construction, adornment, display and keeping as live specimens. It includes trafficking in contravention of laws governing large volume and high value natural resource trade sectors, such as those producing timber and fisheries goods. Although sometimes perceived as somehow distinct from other wildlife trade sectors, most food fisheries still come from wild sources, and most timber comes from natural forests rather than plantations, including from illegal sources (Box 2.1). In practice, most of the analysis in this and previous editions of the World Wildlife Crime Report focuses on the trafficking of species subject to trade regulation under CITES.

Speakers included Krishna Kunapareddy (NADO), Chris Whitaker (Region XII Council of Governments), and Jennifer O'Connor (Northern Arizona Council of Governments). Austerity measures 2025-28 will reduce benefits, increase poverty and result in financial distress in families. Reduced access to primary health care (statutory maximum waiting time increases from two weeks to three months) and increased availability of alcohol (lowered taxes and weakening of the alcohol sales monopoly) will add to the burden.
