What is it?
•It is a tool that helps students bring focus to and
identify and refine the different criteria of a list in
order to rank and assign them in a list.

•The tool helps students through the use of visual
diagrams, explain their reasoning, and compare
their work.

• The tool helps students organize thoughts, debate
opinions, and reach an agreement on the order behind a
specific list of items needed to be grouped.

• History – important factors with people moving from one
country to another.
• English – Ability to rank facts regarding a good book.
• Elementary – Develop a list of their favorite things to eat when
teaching about health.

strategic way of thinking through being creative
and completing and comparing a list of items to
narrow down the most important ones.
HOW TO SETUP A NEW PROJECT
Five steps to create a successful Visual Ranking Tool:
• Set up new project
• Add photos
• Rank the items in your list
• Compare your list of items
• Assess the results of your list
• Utilize the Visual Ranking Application
DEVELOP YOUR PROJECT
• Identify your focal point of study you want to develop into your project such as a subject or
time or person from history.
• List out the contributions or significant importance of the focal point.
• Engage your students to think outside the box through higher-level discussion questions:
• What is the definition of progress?
• What are the cost and overall benefits of what we can create?
• What does progress do for us as a society?
• Once you complete your development of your project, it is important to guide your students
in creating a list that is manageable of 8-10 items.

• Create open discussion with the teams through the use of the
Visual Ranking Application about results
• Discuss with the teams whether they feel there is a correlation
with anything other teams have developed
• Review and share your final ranking with your teams to encourage
small-group discussions as to why you felt the rankings ended the
way they did
• Teacher can comment to prompt more discussion
USING VISUAL RANKING APP
• Encourage students to utilize their own technology when
completing their assignment through the use of the smart
phone app for Android or iOS
• Use the app as homework for the students to access their
projects from home and come up with additional
discussion questions for the next day

Statement from Intel Online Tools:
The tools (Visual Ranking, Seeing Reason, Showing Evidence and Assessing Projects) were written over 10 years ago in an application
environment that is dated, lacks flexibility and is too expensive to maintain and update. Similar tools
(https://engage.intel.com/docs/DOC-59367) that are more effective and mobile have since come to market. Furthermore, usage has
been dropping regularly. For these reasons, Intel has decided to take the tools offline by 4-15-2017 and will invest in future products
and programs that will have more impact. Please use these months to save what artifacts you wish to keep, export assessments and
search for alternatives.

  • 2. INTEL VISUAL RANKING TOOL What is it? •It is a tool that helps students bring focus to and identify and refine the different criteria of a list in order to rank and assign them in a list.
  • 3. INTEL VISUAL RANKING TOOL What does it help you do? •The tool helps students through the use of visual diagrams, explain their reasoning, and compare their work.
  • 4. INTEL VISUAL RANKING TOOL What activates does the tool support? • The tool helps students organize thoughts, debate opinions, and reach an agreement on the order behind a specific list of items needed to be grouped.

HOW CAN WE USE THEM IN OUR CLASSROOM? • They enable students of all ages to make a visual ranking of items. • Examples of use in a classroom: • History – important factors with people moving from one country to another. • English – Ability to rank facts regarding a good book. • Elementary – Develop a list of their favorite things to eat when teaching about health.
  • 10. BENEFITS OF VISUAL RANKING •This process enables students to use a more strategic way of thinking through being creative and completing and comparing a list of items to narrow down the most important ones.
  • 11. HOW TO SETUP A NEW PROJECT Five steps to create a successful Visual Ranking Tool: • Set up new project • Add photos • Rank the items in your list • Compare your list of items • Assess the results of your list • Utilize the Visual Ranking Application

DEVELOP YOUR PROJECT • Identify your focal point of study you want to develop into your project such as a subject or time or person from history. • List out the contributions or significant importance of the focal point. • Engage your students to think outside the box through higher-level discussion questions: • What is the definition of progress? • What are the cost and overall benefits of what we can create? • What does progress do for us as a society? • Once you complete your development of your project, it is important to guide your students in creating a list that is manageable of 8-10 items.

  • 14. RANK YOUR ITEMS •Utilize group discussions to determine the item rank •Move items around until your group is confident their ranking is final •Finalize your rankings and complete your ranking tool
  • 15. COMPARE YOUR LISTS •Create a group activity to enable the students to work together from different groups for list comparison •Evaluate what your fellow students think of your list •Finalize your final rankings of your list to ensure you are set with how you have them

ASSESS YOUR RESULTS • Create open discussion with the teams through the use of the Visual Ranking Application about results • Discuss with the teams whether they feel there is a correlation with anything other teams have developed • Review and share your final ranking with your teams to encourage small-group discussions as to why you felt the rankings ended the way they did • Teacher can comment to prompt more discussion

USING VISUAL RANKING APP • Encourage students to utilize their own technology when completing their assignment through the use of the smart phone app for Android or iOS • Use the app as homework for the students to access their projects from home and come up with additional discussion questions for the next day

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR VISUAL RANKING Websites to consider for Visual Ranking • www.popplet.com • www.padlet.com • www.mindomo.com • www.pinup.com Statement from Intel Online Tools: The tools (Visual Ranking, Seeing Reason, Showing Evidence and Assessing Projects) were written over 10 years ago in an application environment that is dated, lacks flexibility and is too expensive to maintain and update. Similar tools (https://engage.intel.com/docs/DOC-59367) that are more effective and mobile have since come to market. Furthermore, usage has been dropping regularly. For these reasons, Intel has decided to take the tools offline by 4-15-2017 and will invest in future products and programs that will have more impact. Please use these months to save what artifacts you wish to keep, export assessments and search for alternatives.
