Lesson Purpose/Intention
We can use what we have learned about
representing sets in Venn diagrams to help us
find solutions to real-world problems.
Today we will employ Venn diagrams in finding
solutions to such problems.
Activity: “A RECALL-ection”
(5 minutes)
The teacher will give the following riddles to
the learners. Each team who have the most
correct answer wins.
No. 1
I have no traffic lights, yet cars go to and from,
Where roads meet, I'm the place to go.
At this bustling crossroads, you'll find me there,
A junction of paths, where people share.
What am I? INTERSECTION
No. 2
I am a mystery you cannot see,
Count me correctly, I hold the key.
In a set or a list, I'm what you seek,
The total count of elements you must speak.

LESSON ACTIVITY
(25 minutes)
Angelo’s teacher asks her 30 students about
their sports after school. They say that they
can play one or more of the sports basketball,
football, and volleyball. Two students say
that they play none of the sports.
The teacher also finds out that:
1) 14 play football.
2) Angelo and 2 others play all 3 sports.
3) 15 play volleyball, 4 play football and
volleyball only, and 7 play volleyball and
basketball only.
Questions
1.(i) Show on the diagram the given information
that 3 students play all 3 sports.
(ii)Using this information and item 3 of Part 4A,
find how many students play volleyball only.
2. If 2 students play football only, find how many
play basketball and football only.
3. Find how many students play basketball only.

  • 9. Lesson Purpose/Intention We can use what we have learned about representing sets in Venn diagrams to help us find solutions to real-world problems. Today we will employ Venn diagrams in finding solutions to such problems.
  • 10. Activity: “A RECALL-ection” (5 minutes) The teacher will give the following riddles to the learners. Each team who have the most correct answer wins.

  • 17. Key Term Intersection – the set containing all elements of A that also belong in B
  • 18. Key Term Subset – Set A is said to be a subset of Set B if all the element of Set A are also present in Set B
  • 19. Key Term Number of elements – the cardinality of a set or the number of elements in a set
  • 20. Key Term Union – the union of two given sets is the set that contains all the elements present in both sets
  • 21. Key Term Set – a collection of distinct, well- defined objects forming a group
  • 22. Key Term Venn Diagram – is a widely used diagram style that shows the logical relation between sets, popularized by John Venn
  • 23. LESSON ACTIVITY (25 minutes) Angelo’s teacher asks her 30 students about their sports after school. They say that they can play one or more of the sports basketball, football, and volleyball. Two students say that they play none of the sports. The teacher also finds out that: 1) 14 play football. 2) Angelo and 2 others play all 3 sports. 3) 15 play volleyball, 4 play football and volleyball only, and 7 play volleyball and basketball only.
  • 24. Questions 1.(i) Show on the diagram the given information that 3 students play all 3 sports. (ii)Using this information and item 3 of Part 4A, find how many students play volleyball only. 2. If 2 students play football only, find how many play basketball and football only. 3. Find how many students play basketball only.
