Lafcadio Hearn was a writer born in Greece to a Greek mother and Irish father who later moved to Ireland. He married a Japanese woman and moved to Japan, where he wrote extensively about Japanese culture and folklore, becoming best known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories. Hearn lived in Japan from 1890 until his death in 1904, assimilating fully into Japanese society and converting to Buddhism.
