Making Break through innovations in India discusses case studies of innovative companies in India. Dainik Bhaskar newspaper grew to a circulation of over 4.4 million by understanding reader patterns and personalizing the newspaper for different cities, launching with over 100,000 copies in each new location. Shantha Biotech was the first Indian company to develop recombinant vaccines including for hepatitis B, overcoming challenges of funding and expertise to produce affordable lifesaving medicines. Bosch India helped manufacturers meet stringent European emission standards through innovations like common rail fuel injection systems, enabling continued use of existing engine designs.
4. Orbit Shifting Innovation
• Orbit-shifting innovation happens due to transformation.
• At the heart of an Orbit-shifting innovation is the breakthrough that
creates a new orbit and achieves a transformative impact.
• Having and idea doesn’t make you innovative.
• Eg: Arla Foods
5. Achievements…
• Entered market as number 1 with 172,000 copies on 19th Dec 1996
• Chandigarh- 69,000 copies on its launch day in 2000

• Ahmedabad- 452,000 copies on its launch day creating the world record in 2003
• In 15 months expanded in Gujarat
• Punjab- 11.5 lakh copies in 2006
• Won the Business Innovation award by Marico Innovation foundation.
6. Dainik Bhaskar
- No. 1 from Day one
• In 1996, 40 yrs old Bhopal based newspaper group Dainik Bhaskar

• Indian Biotechnology based in Hyderabad
• 1st company to develop, manufacture and market recombinant
human healthcare products
• Dr. K I Varaprasad Reddy (1993)
17. Where & How it started?
Break through come more from Furious people
New Jersey- Geneva- International Health Conference
Indians treated badly – begging for the low cost or subsidized vaccines
Came across the diseases caused due to virus Hepatitis B and its impact on Indian
In 1990’s around 3,40,000 people dying due to Hepatitis B
Gathered meeting of Indians scientists- 30 to 35 people- Shared his dream to
eliminate Hepatitis B from India- Wanted to make rDNA Vaccines in India
Managed to get 120 Lakhs for the cause
18. Challenges Faced
No background in Biotechnology
Studied Electronic Engineering
How to put the team of skilled scientist in India
Osmania University- Dr Malla Reddy- 20,000/month
Dr. Gita Sharma & Varaprasad joint venture
Started Shantha Biotech in 1993
Main challenge to separate the surface Antigen that provokes the response from immune system
to destroy virus
Tough time- Financial Crisis- Research Pending
19. Breakthrough Turn
H.E Yusuf Bin Alawi Abdullha- Foreign minister of sultanate of Oman- Investment in India
190 Lakhs investment
CCMB rented their lab to Shantha for 1 year
In 1995 Shantha moved to its own factory- Dr Prasad as R&D consultant
1st batch of r-DNA vaccines ready in March 1996- Tested on animals- Phase 1 trials by
NIMS- Phase 2 trials; Shanvac came out with flying colours
Competitors- MNC vaccines prices lowered 750 to 520- Rumours floating Indian Vaccines
not safe
20. 2 # Bosch India
• Bosch is India’s largest automotive component manufacturer
• Since 1951
• Sale of 13,200 Cr in 2013
21. Challenges
With increasing urbanization stringent European emission norms were implemented
Major challenge was to create a pump that could enable an existing traditional engine to meet
the rigorous emission norms
In 1989-90, PF Pumps- in 2002 PF pumps soon becomes extinct- Common rail system Pumps
Now the PF pumps were to be modified to give better emission
Change was needed in performance and not the shape of pump
Another challenge was to create the pressure at 1600 bars with PF pumps
CR pumps has 3 key components; a driving unit, 3 pumping units and in built fuel quantity
regulating unit
22. Impact
Business Boomed since pump is simple, assembly installation prices
have crashed
Pump needs no servicing by highly trained technicians
Same pump can be upgraded to Euro 4 emission norms
