2. Who is the poet of the peom “The Voice of God”?
Ans: This poem is written by Louis I. Newman (1893-1972). He was born in Providence Rhode
Island (USA). He studied at Brown University and after his doctorate lectured at Columbia. He is
the author of many books on religious subjects. This poem brings out his religious bent of mind.
3. Write down the central idea of this poem.
Ans: This short and religious poem exhibits the phenomenon of the presence of Divine who
dwells everywhere in this universe. This poem reveals the deep nearness of God to man. You can
get close to God by following generous and virtuous deeds. In short, if someone wants to be
close to God, he/she should not aloof himself from people. God loves those who love His fellow
man.
4. Why did author climb the steeple? And Why did tell him to go down again?
Ans: The author (Louis I. Newman) climbed the steeple to hear the voice of God. He thought
that God lives up somewhere in the sky and might find Him by reaching the top most steeple.
But God declared the poet to go down again and search Him among the people. The service

humanity. It is therefore, rightly said that:
“To Serve Humanity is to Serve God”.
