This document provides an overview of muscle contraction at the cellular and molecular level. It describes the organization of skeletal muscle fibers and sarcomeres, made up of thin actin filaments and thick myosin filaments. Muscle contraction is triggered by a nerve impulse that causes calcium ions to be released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calcium binds to troponin and allows myosin to bind to and pull on actin filaments, shortening the muscle. Relaxation occurs when calcium is pumped back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum by ATP-powered calcium pumps.
