Constraints
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the constraints which will affect your project.
Constraints
What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work?
I believe the timescale for this project will have a positive effect on my work because 42 days
allows for me to do drafts for each piece of work and retrieve important feedback from my tutor.
This will likely impact my work positively by giving me the opportunity to enhance my overall
grade.
Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be provided with? How
could this affect your project? What can you do about this?
I may have to use a camera that belongs to York College in order to take any photographs
necessary for my project. To do this I will have to sign a form that puts it under my name whilst I
am in possession of it. The only tool needed that I am unable to use at home is Photoshop but I will
have enough time at college for this not to be a problem. If I become ill or am unable to attend
college this could become a problem but because I live relatively close to college I will be able to
catch up on Mondays and Tuesdays.
What constraints are in place regarding your approach to marketing? Do you think this will help
or hinder your project and why?
I will have to keep almost completely in touch with the identity Irn-Bru have created for
themselves in the audiences eyes. This limits my colour scheme, as I more or less have to include
either both or one of the colours blue and orange. Because Irn-Bru are so well known for their
humorous adverts, I will have to include to some kind of humour in mine for it to fit in with their
brand and vision. I believe this will help my project rather than hinder it because I am likely to
achieve a higher grade for sticking closer to their identity, and now there have been guidelines put
down it will be difficult for me not to follow them.
What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project?
Rule 4.1 under 04 Harm and Offence in CAP’s advertising codes states that my marketing
communications must not contain anything that is likely to cause serious or widespread offence.
This will involve things like religion, sexual orientation, race, and gender. This will help my project
in the sense that I will be aware of my boundaries, and the only way that this could hinder my
project is by putting a strain on my creative freedom, though I do not believe this will be a problem
as I am unlikely to risk anything I believe has a chance at causing offence.
